Seeking hols that bring a taste of history, culture and local delicacies? Make immediate tracks for Camping Sous Les Étoiles Normandie – a family- and dog-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Normandy village of Saint-Martin-des-Besaces – where all of that combines for a sweet stay. This family-run and English-speaking site is well placed for explores in past and present: it’s about 45 minutes from the hikes, bikes, paths and trails (not to mention châteaux) of the Regional Nature Park of Normandie-Maine, and less than an hour from the museums and memorials of the D-Day beaches Utah, Omaha, Gold, Sword and Juno. While out and about, sampling the local wares is an absolute must; this area is renowned for its cheese, but the real star of the show is calvados, the region’s apple and pear brandy. Luckily, the site is about 40 minutes from a handful of distilleries, and there are a couple of cideries nearby for good measure. When site days are needed, there’s plenty to entice. An old farmstead, there are lots of green spaces here to lounge around on while kids play, and apple trees dotted around to inspire thoughts of (more) calvados and cider – nip over to the on-site bar for a sip, and nab a bite for dinner in the Cow Shed.

Tyckte om: The spacious pitches, the facilities were very clean and up to date. We enjoyed the food and drink served at the bar. The owners were very friendly and helpful. A great campsite which I can thoroughly recommend.

Tyckte inte om: There was some traffic noise from a nearby road but not enough to be a problem.

Tyckte om: Lovely, extremely well organised site with excellent facilities. Our pitch was level and very secluded. We particularly enjoyed the spotlessly clean shower block. The on-site bar and restaurant was a welcome bonus!

Tyckte om: We loved the beautiful old farm outbuildings and pretty environment. It has a quiet and relaxed atmosphere, and the owners were friendly and helpful. Plenty of signage and thoughtful touches. The shared facilities were spotlessly clean and nice to use, we also appreciated separate male and female toilets, including toilet seats! Games room, outdoor covered space, kitchen facilities, and a lovely bar/restaurant. Would love to return.

Tyckte om: The campsite has a great feeling as you drive up to the reception/restaurant area. The old barns dressed with fairy lights feel warm and welcoming. The reception desk seemed to be the serving area for the restaurant drinks too, so it was quite busy. Having said that we were seen to immediately and everyone was friendly and efficient. We ate (both evenings) at the restaurant and the food was very good quality, and came quickly too. We would recommend the site and we would most certainly stay here again.

Tyckte inte om: Very dark at night, I think some low outdoor lighting should be kept on throughout the night, for safety reasons.

Tyckte om: Es un camping excepcional en todos los sentidos, el entorno es increíble, parcelas de césped, todo muy bien cuidado, los baños, las duchas, la estancias de juego, el bar...es un lugar idílico. Los dueños muy amables, mucha educación y respeto por parte de todas las personas..le doy un 10.

Tyckte om: We liked everything about this site. Very picturesque with the old farming buildings, and the facilities were spotless. Lovely hot showers and an onsite restaurant/bar. There is also a mini kitchen with a fridge freezer, microwave and kettle in case of need. Games room was a nice touch and a covered seating area to help escape the rain. Pitches were a good size too

Tyckte om: We really loved the onsite restaurant and bar. The local butcher came on the Friday night and did a bbq too. Brilliant showers and overall the site was very picturesque

Tyckte om: Cadre verdoyant, charmant. Parfait pour se reposer. Lieux très calme. Les sanitaires et les douches sont bien entretenus. Kitchenette et frigo à disposition. Papier toilette et raclette pour les douche à disposition, sèche-cheveux également. Nombreux équipements présents

Start with a visit to Saint-Martin-des-Besace’s Musée 44 La Percée du Bocage (a 10-minute walk), dedicated to the allies’ liberation of Normandy, then get a slow-paced feel for the region on horseback with a tour from one of the stables within 10 minutes’ drive. More high-octane pursuits beckon 15 minutes away at the partially demolished Viaduc de la Souleuvre, where catapulting off towering objects (with bungee-cord firmly attached) is encouraged, and at Parc Festyland themepark on the outskirts of Caen, 40 minutes from base. Caen is a top spot for an urban day or two, with abbeys, memorials, museums, châteaux, gardens and (of course) shops to traipse around – but those in need of scenic vistas might do better to turn their sights to the coast, where the spectacular famed Mont Saint-Michel towers above the sea. History buffs left wanting more after trips to the beaches of D-Day can dedicate a day to the town of Bayeux, where the 70-metre Bayeux tapestry is on display depicting the story of William the Conqueror, and the Baron Gérard art museum adds to the cultural experience. Within 15 minutes, those whose passions lie in the open air can spend days whizzing along ziplines and poking around treetops at Accrobranche Mayya, and budding zoologists can get their fix among the white lions, Siberian tigers and red cat-bears – that’s red pandas – at Zoo de Jurques.
