What a splendid spot for a break in the Caithness countryside – the sheltered pitches at Wick River Campsite sit in a secluded and quiet location right on the banks of the Wick River, and yet they’re only a handy 10-minute walk from the various shops, pubs and takeaways of Wick. That setting also means that you’ll be within easy reach of plenty of things to keep you busy for several days – a short stroll into town gives you the opportunity to board wildlife-spotting boats, sample the delights of the Pulteney Distillery or take a bracing dip in the outdoor tidal pool (or the indoor pool if you’re not quite brave enough to face the chilly waters of the North Sea…) This is a site that’s run as a community enterprise, with all profits fed back into improving the site or contributing to local projects that will benefit visitors and residents alike. Stay here and you’ll be supporting a great cause as well as putting yourselves within easy reach of places like John o’ Groats and activities like fishing, golf and coast walks. The site has modern facilities including male and female toilets and showers, a family shower room and a disabled toilet and shower room. There's also a washing-up area and a laundry room. A play park is just next door. Dogs are welcome to stay here too and join you for walks along the riverside trails that start just outside the site (these are great for a family bike ride too).

Tyckte om From the arrival to leaving the stay was so pleasant we wished we could have stayed longer. We booked this as a one night stop whilst doing the NC500 as I think many others do. The welcome was friendly and informative. The site was beautifully located near the river and very clean. The facilities were all modern, very clean and plentiful. The play park and local rabbits kept the children entertained whilst getting dinner sorted and there’s even a room with a microwave, fridge etc that can be used.

Tyckte inte om The only thing is midges which were plentiful in the evening but not site fault so don’t forget nets!

Tyckte om This is an amazing campsite, I would say the best I have stayed in.
The pitches are generous and well spaced out, the facilities are spotless, yes they get busy and people don’t always tidy after themselves but the cleaners do a great job.
The little shop is reasonably priced and friendly and the coffee lounge is a great addition.
A lovely short walk to town along the river where there is a variety of takeaways. There was also the great chip van visited the site.
Finally I would highly recommend the Caithness Seacoast boat trips, fun and interesting, book in advance.

Tyckte om Everything. The site and amenities were so clean. The little shop was great and well stocked. There was even a vending machine for sweet late night treats. The staff that we encountered were excellent.
There were plenty of toilets and showers. The disabled and family toilets and showers were also excellent. Plenty of dish washing stations. There was a laundry area with a fridge/freezer and a charging station.

Tyckte om Beautiful clean facilities. Likely more ideal for motorhome / van life / caravans.

Tyckte inte om We parked up ready to set our tentbox, and were instantly swarmed by flies. Our pitch was opposite reception, and I think given the location and trees it wouldn’t have been a comfortable stay for us. Unfortunately didn’t stay the night and found another site.

Från föreståndaren: We are sorry you did not stay the night due to flies. We are not normally bothered with flies but we sometimes find flies are attracted to the hot engines of vehicles that have just arrived, especially if there is no wind.

If you had waitied a short while until your engine cooled down I am sure the fly situation would have improved, or if you had spoken with Reception I am sure they would have tried to move you to a different pitch somewhere else on site.

Wick, of course, is the place to start – you can walk into the centre of town to visit the Wick Heritage Centre, grab a dram or two at Pulteney Distillery or head to the harbour to book a boat trip taking you out among the sea stacks and along the cliffs to see if you can spot seals, puffins and other marine life. Elsewhere along the coast, find the ruins of Castle of Old Wick (10 minutes’ drive) and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle (15 minutes), explore the intriguing stone creations at Hill O’ Many Stanes (15 minutes) or check out the natural rock formations at Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes) and Duncansby Stacks (25 minutes). Of course you can’t miss the opportunity to go up to the very north of Scotland to visit John O’Groats (25 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (40 minutes). While you’re in the area, stop by at the 16th-century Castle & Gardens of Mey (half an hour) or take a detour to Reiss Sands (10 minutes) for a stroll among the dunes.
