The centre of Leicester is only about a 20-minute drive from Fox’s Furrow – and yet this site’s immediate surroundings are properly peaceful and rural, with fields and natural countryside views all around. The beauty of all this, of course, is that you can have a nicely varied stay here if you like, perhaps pedalling along National Cycle Route 63 one day (it’s about a mile away) and then heading into the city to visit the National Space Centre the next. There’s a bus stop just under a mile away in the village of Houghton on the Hill if you’d rather travel by public transport. Also in the village are a couple of pubs, a village shop, a pharmacy and a fish and chip shop – all of it handily a short walk away across the fields (or a couple of minutes in the car). Getting in, out and all around should be straightforward here as the site is about a quarter of a mile from the A47; there’s no hint of the main road while on site, though, as the place has a very natural feel to it and is surrounded by a tree belt that provides plenty of privacy as well as acting as a home to local wildlife. In keeping with this rural setting, facilities have been kept to a minimum here – the essentials are covered, however, with a wifi connection, a washing-up area and toilet/shower facilities housed in a very stylishly decorated classic shepherd’s hut.

Tyckte om: The site is beautiful and well secluded, tucked away into its own little corner. The toilets and showers were really clean with lots of hot water. Good wifi connection too.

Tyckte inte om: The conifer plants outside the toilets - completely at odds with all the native planting elsewhere and completely unneeded, as far as I could work out. Hardly a problem though in terms of staying here!

Tyckte om: Stayed with older children and family- superb site. Had to speak to Saffron and Glen regarding booking as we have a tiny caravan and they were delightful. Fabulous views, quirky facilities that are lovely and clean. Definitely will be booking again.

Tyckte om: Quiet location (OK the combine harvester was working till 10pm but that's countryside life!) Fantastic showers, best of any campsite I've used. Super helpful and swift responses from owners - including recommendations for local curry restaurants! Check out Rose & Crown, we got a takeaway.

Tyckte inte om: Sloping site which meant not such a great night's sleep in a tent. And we had the choice of anywhere. Whilst immaculately clean on arrival by the next morning the shower unit floors were covered in grass and water. Suggest owners install a mop.

Tyckte om: Small bijou friendly site. Shepherd hut toilets and showers were a pleasant surprise, clean and more than adequate. Dogs were made very welcome there and nearby walks. A definite return for us.

Tyckte inte om: Tad hilly…… forearmed is for’warned. It really want that much of a problem.

Tyckte inte om: Overcrowded. The website said they would only accommodate 6 tents, but turnt out there were 9 tents at one night. Inclined camping field, making us quite difficult to stand in our tent. Neighbouring tents were too noisy with loud speaker. Frequent aeroplane sound during day and night. Shower rooms were a bit to crammed, and the floor always wetted.

Lokala sevärdheter

Getting out to see more of your rural surroundings should be easy enough here, as there are some great walks in the vicinity, along with those bike rides on National Cycle Route 63. Rutland Water (20 minutes’ drive) is another good place for a walk or a bike ride (there’s a path that goes all the way round the lake), and you can also play golf, try your hand at sailing or bounce across the inflatable aqua park. If the kids are keen to meet cute animals, head along to Windmill Farm Park (15 minutes) for indoor and outdoor animals, play areas and a café. Bird on the Hand Falconry Experiences (15 minutes) makes a great day out for those keen to get up close to the big birds. Over in Leicester (20 minutes) there are plenty of options for a day out (especially if you need rainy-day activities) – the city is home to the National Space Centre as well as the Retro Computer Museum and King Richard III Visitor Centre.
