Our Guide To The Best Places To Eat In East Yorkshire

Publicerad

East Yorkshire is a land of gastronomic plenty. The East Riding of Yorkshire (to give it its full and proper name) is a rich agricultural county, so locally sourced, farm-fresh ingredients can be found on menus throughout the area. There’s also an abundance of seafood straight from the daily catches hauled in at the harbours dotted along the coast.

Whether it’s Michelin-starred restaurants, tucked-away country pubs, fine dining experiences or rustic fare that take your fancy, you’re never far from a delightful meal on a holiday in East Yorkshire.

Here’s our guide to the best places to eat in East Yorkshire.

The best places to eat in Beverley

The Westwood

There aren’t many twins that have gained Michelin stars; the Barkers, who run one of the finest restaurants in Yorkshire, are among a very select group. Inspired by the farms and fisheries of the county in which they grew up (even the herbs are from a local grower), the Westwood dishes up the very best of modern British cuisine. The Westwood occupies a wing of the town’s former Georgian courthouse, so you could end up dining in one of the old holding cells. Mercifully the only bars that remain are those that serve bottles from an extensive wine list.

The Pipe and Glass

If ever a place shouted ‘put me on a chocolate box’, it’s the Pipe and Glass in South Dalton near Beverley. The 15th-century pub occupies the former gatehouse to the Dalton Park pleasure grounds. It’s a remarkable find so deep in the countryside, combining unpretentious pub staples with a Michelin-starred touch. The prices aren’t even particularly proportionate to the reputation or the portion sizes of the Pipe and Glass. And in reference to the opening sentence, there’s even a ‘five reasons to love chocolate’ platter for afters.

The best places to eat in Bridlington

Burlingtons

Burlingtons has been serving home-cooked food in Bridlington Old Town for over three decades. Run by a husband-and-wife team, Burlingtons serves traditional grills and home-cooked favourites alongside a few Thai twists and Italian dishes. Lighter bites are also on offer, and the Early Bear menu is great value for money. If you’re taking the kids, count the dozens of teddy bears in the restaurant. When a soft toy gift from David (chef) to Judy (front of house) went missing, local customers began bringing bears as a show of appreciation. There’s also said to be a giant mural in the gents’ bathroom (you may need to ask for a tour if you’re of the opposite sex).

The Lamp

The Lamp occupies a Grade II-listed building on Bridlington High Street. The name of the restaurant comes from the grand Victorian street light illuminating its rear courtyard. The Lamp serves contemporary British food with seasonal menus for lunch and an evening meal. There’s also a weekly refresh of the specials to take advantage of in-season local produce.

The best places to eat in Driffield

St Quintin Arms

This 13th-century coaching inn is in the quiet village of Harpham, just a few miles from Driffield and the delights of the East Riding coastline. The St Quintin Arms offers a faff-free menu that goes big on meat dishes sourced from the local farms (game and lamb have their own specials boards), with plenty of veggie and vegan options too. There’s a large terrace and a rather lovely garden out back too.

Trishna Tandoori

Sometimes only a curry will do – at those times, Trishna Tandoori is the place for an Indian in Driffield. Trishna has been in the town for years and has a loyal following for its traditional curry dishes, tandoori mains and a chef’s speciality menu that’s way more extensive than many.

The best places to eat near Hull

Tapasya @ Marina

Overlooking Hull Marina, Tapasya is an Indian fine dining experience with British hints. Classic Southeast Asian dishes are fused with local twists and Yorkshire-sourced farm meats and seafood from the East Riding coast are flavoured with in-house dried and ground spices. It makes for an eclectic and elevated menu, with the five-course tasting menu a big hit. Tapasya is quite possibly the best upscale Indian restaurant in Yorkshire, and they also run a street food stall in Hull market for sampling while shopping.

J Johnson’s Wine Bar and Restaurant

J Johnsons is in the Hull Fruit Market area, on Humber Street, and named after something of a legendary figure from its heyday as a bustling hive of fruit, nut and veg sellers. The wine bar and restaurant are operated by the team behind the nearby Butler White’s bistro. In keeping with the building’s heritage, the menu is all about robust flavours – occasionally with a fruit and nut nod thrown in – with an Italian and French theme. All of it is served amid an airy space of bare brick and wooden floor, with a sun terrace for fine days and evenings.

The best places to eat near Goole

Mr NessuNo

A touch of the Mediterranean in the centre of Goole comes in the form of Mr NessuNo Italian restaurant. With a family-friendly atmosphere and a little live music, this ristorante has a menu packed with authentic pizza, pasta, and fish and meat dishes cooked Italian-style. There’s an early bird menu every day of the week too.

The Peppered Pig

15 minutes east of Goole is the sleepy village of East Cowick where the Peppered Pig serves up homey dishes with an elegant flair. Country classics adorn the menu but all with a touch of finesse, served with sides that you might not have expected (but that all work wonderfully). The kids’ menu is full of dishes for those who have outgrown the popular pink porcine character, while the little ones (who, let’s face it, will refer to the place as the ‘Peppa Pig’) are well catered for too. The Pig also has an on-site deli so you can pick up bits for your picnic too.
