More caravan security calls after thefts in Ceredigion

Авг 31 2012 Автор Laura Canning

Police in Dyfed-Powys are launching a caravan and shed security initiative to combat theft, after several static caravan break-ins around Ceredigion.

Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and install locks to prevent doors and windows being forced open.

Thieves have been targeting unoccupied caravans on caravan sites where there is natural coverage and an easy escape route, using the bathroom and suite windows to break in. DVD players, flat screen TVs and games consoles are preferred by thieves due to their high value and because they are easy to dispose of.

Pat Jalloal, a Community Safety PC in the area, said: ‘I would encourage owners to ensure that these items are removed from the caravan during unoccupied times. It will also be advantageous to mark properties with UV pens, which can be obtained from site proprietors or the Aberystwyth Police station.

‘Proprietors should ensure that CCTV systems and external site lighting is in good working order to assist the police and act as a deterrent.

'Not all burglars target houses, some are opportunists so it is important that expensive equipment is not left unattended and on display – especially when your caravan is not being used.’

Police will also be conducting patrols at caravan sites across Ceredigion in an effort to stop the thefts.
