Complexe des Oustalous

In summer, get set for watery adventures on the Ariège River, paddle across Lake Bouan at the foot of the immense cliffs at Quié de Sinsat (10 minutes’ drive), which is also a hub for rock climbing, or learn to waterski at Base Nautique Téléski (20 minutes). The Plateau de Beille (25 minutes) is a major centre for hikes of all levels from family to expert, and also has mountain biking trails. You can rent cycles and safety equipment in Les Cabannes. In winter the area is given over the snow sports, with short and easy slopes around the Plateau de Beille for novices to find their ski legs. It’s also a centre for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, and if you need to take the weight off your knees, you can always explore the area from the comfort of a dog sled. After a change of pace? Take the little train up to the mouth of Lombrives Cave (10 minutes) to discover its subterranean caverns and lakeside chambers.
