If you fancy digging deeper into the history of the area, take a trip to the Necropolis of Tarquinia (10 minutes' drive) – this UNESCO Wold Heritage Site has 200 painted tombs dating back to the 7th century. Travel further back in time at the Etruscopolis Museum (25 minutes) where lots more historical artefacts are laid bare. Nature more your thing? The only saltpan in the Lazio region is 10 minutes away, where guests can glimpse pink flamingos and other endangered species. A different type of thrill can be found at the Aquafelix waterpark (25 minutes) where tumbling slides and rides should keep kids entertained for a while. Those who prefer to see where their feet take them may choose to simply wander the streets of Monte Romano (25 minutes) or stroll the humungous grounds of the humbling Castello Orsini-Odescalchi (an hour) with its plentiful lake views. If you'd like to venture further afield, head for Rome with a drive of an hour and a half, or hop on a ferry at the port of Civitavecchia, 25 minutes away, for onward travel to Sardinia, Corsica and other points around the Med.
