Caer Mynydd Caravan Park

Hike the Denbigh moors and head to Gwylfa Hiraethog, the ruins of an old shooting lodge that’s rumoured to be haunted; less hair-raisingly, the moors also have fishing, canoeing and sailing on the reservoir Llyn Brenig, where there’s a visitor centre, café and info on the local area. The coniferous Clocaenog Forest is also on the moors and has several clear walks with views to Snowdonia and the Berwyn range, and a walk to the highest point of the forest, The Mast. Clocaenog is one of the areas in Wales to see red squirrels, and an enclosed area in the forest has rare Przewalski wild horses. Caer Mynydd is 15 miles from the north Wales coastline and the seaside town of Rhyl, with its sandy six-mile stretch to neighbouring Prestatyn. The Sun Centre at Rhyl has adventure pools, surf pools and waterslides, and there’s a SeaQuarium on the seafront with an underwater tunnel, sea lion show and tropical reef zone for curious little squirts. Two other seaside resorts, Llandudno and Colwyn Bay, are within easy driving distance from here. Golfers will find several courses in the area including courses at Rhyl and Prestatyn, with the closest at Denbigh Golf Club a couple of miles from Caer Mynydd. Prefer to cast off rather than tee off? Take your tackle to Llyn Brenig for fly fishing or to St Asaph’s River Elwy to land trout and Atlantic salmon; Denbighshire’s River Dee is famous for its salmon too. There are three castles near Caer Mynydd: Denbigh Castle with its triple-towered gatehouse; the thirteenth century Rhuddlan Castle built by Edward I, and Bodelwyddan Castle with maze, formal garden, woodland and World War I practice trenches. Elsewhere for Denbighshire history, there’s Ruthin Gaol with displays on the Victorian prison system, pretending to be a Cistercian monk at Llangollen’s Valle Crucis Abbey or taking the old steam train Llangollen Railway along the River Dee to Carrog; if the kids like steaming about, there’s a miniature railway track around Marine Lake in Rhyl.
