Almost-wild camping among the sand dunes on the western fringe of Connemara on the Wild Atlantic Way... with spectacular Atlantic views from a private sandy beach…all this, and hot showers too. Those of you who are ‘nearly wild’ rather than ‘really wild’ campers (happy to camp without most facets of civilisation but also fond of a hot shower in the morning, ta very much) will find Clifden Eco Beach Camping and Caravanning Park on the western edge of Connemara in gorgeous Galway just the ticket: a coastal park with ace Atlantic views on three sides, set on biodiverse Machair grass among eight hectares of dunes with dry clean pitches and the comfort and safety of a small, modern and family-run park. Facilities include a washer/dryer, free phone calls within Ireland and to the UK, private fishing points and a kitchenette for campers’ use with free tea, coffee and milk. Clifden is a strongly sustainable site with an environmental emphasis and a low carbon footprint; it’s run to be clutter-free and as eco-friendly as possible and even has organically sourced local mineral water to all its fixtures. Campfires are allowed, as are dogs (once your mutt sees this beach, he’ll think he’s died and gone to heaven), and supplies can be picked up two minutes' drive away in the village of Claddaghduff or at Clifden town within 10 minutes. Pick up your sausages and marshmallows and fire up a blaze at the eco-friendly firepit to lie back and watch the sky at: this is top stargazing territory too because of the low light pollution on the grounds. Getting around Ireland on your own two feet? Park owner Kris can arrange a pick up from the station at Clifden, subject to availability.

Turn left onto Omey Island/Claddaghduff Road. Continue to follow the road for 6.2km. Turn left following the signposts for Clifden Eco Beach Camping and Caravanning Park. Continue to follow the road to our reception (450m). From Westport town Take Leenane/Clifden Road/N59, and continue to follow the N59 for 61.5km. Turn right onto Claddaghduff' Road. Away from your seascape pitch, you don’t have to travel far for more spectacular scenery: the village of Claddaghduff on the doorstep of the park is between the Atlantic and the Twelve Bens mountain range where rocks and the ocean meet. These famed peaks are often scaled by fell walkers who attempt to hike all twelve in one day; if you’re only up for trying one, be brave and make it Benbaun, the highest peak in the Bens and the highest in Co Galway at 729 metres (Benglenisky is the lowest Ben at 516 metres if all this is making you feel faint). Even closer to base are the sea fishing, scuba diving, boating, windsurfing and other watersports from Clifden Eco Beach Camping and Caravanning Park’s own private beach – or snorkel from the water here on a lazy drift dive along the estuary of Streamstown Bay. Feetwise, the tidal island of Omey is within walking distance of your pitch (if you’re there in late July keep an eye out for the famed Omey races on the beach), and there are several other coastal walks directly from the park and around the open landscape of Connemara: take the beach road from Clifden to the harbour and boat club, the Sky Road along Clifden Bay and Streamstown Bayor, or walk the Bog Road into sloping Roundstone and its conservation area. You’ll find several inland options too including Connemara National Park, beautiful Kylemore Abbey and its gardens; outdoor activities and bungee jumping at Killary Adventure Centre; lough and river fishing for trout and salmon; island hopping to the west coast islands like Clare, Achill and Inishbofin; and urban adventuring in Westport and Galway.
