Setting forth for the Lake District to seek out some scenic views? Settle in to Seatoller Farm and you can start on the scenery-seeing without so much as moving from the site. At this family-run working hill farm in Cumbria, the views are stunning whichever way you turn, taking in vistas of the Borrowdale valley and the River Derwent. At this back to basics site, there’s no wifi or phone signal (except Vodafone in Seatoller itself), so switch off and embrace the wild feel. When you roll up, there’s no reception, so pick out a pitch. Owner Daniel comes around in the morning and evening to check on guests, but they’re not always in the house. Every Saturday night (between 6pm and 8pm), stone-baked pizzas are sold on the farm. Take it back to your tent or tuck in inside the seating barn. Tasty toppings include the site’s own pork and Herdwick lamb. Also up for grabs at the farm (or from Dan on his rounds) are rare breed pork sausages, Herdwick lamb and mint burgers or logs and kindling. A nifty central location in the Lake District National Park means this site is well placed for lots of walks, including scrambling up Scafell, ticking off the Wainwright fells or a leisurely riverside ramble. Protected woodland runs along one side of the farm, with wildlife like bats, buzzards, woodpeckers and owls among the site’s frequent visitors. The low-key facilities preserve the relaxed rural vibe – separate gents’ and ladies toilets are close to the pitches, as are washing-up facilities and drinking water taps; showers are a short walk away at the main farm building. Campfires and barbecues are allowed here, but only if they're kept off the grass (you'll immediately be asked to put out any fires that burn the grass). There are a couple of pubs about a mile away for food and drinks, and a hotel five minutes' walk away for drinks on the terrace. The campsite has excellent access to the local bus service that runs regularly from the farm during the season.

  • Recomenda-se que os hóspedes tragam consigo uma lanterna de boa qualidade, uma vez que algumas áreas do local não têm boa iluminação.
  • Tenha em atenção que os chuveiros são unissexo.
  • The shower block is located at the farm, which is a short 6-minute walk from the campsite; the toilets and washing up facilities are located in the middle of the campsite.

Gostou: A lovely site with a great location, lots to do in Borrowdale and close enough to climb Scaffell Pike, also within driving distance of everything we wanted to do. The site itself was simple but had everything necessary for a comfortable stay for 4 nights, with clean toilets and showers (a short but pleasant walk away from the campsite) which were open 8am to 8pm. Daniel the owner was friendly and was able to lend us a fire pit to raise our fire off the ground. The site was quiet at night, had a good choice of well maintained level pitches, and we enjoyed the wildlife on site. There is no signal or WiFi but it was nice to go off-grid!

Não gostou: The only slight issue we had was the number of insects flying around us which put us off sitting outside our tent, but this is to be expected in a campsite and location as wild as this!

Gostou: Beautiful campsite, fantastic trails, pub right near by. We had the pizza on Saturday night and it was delicious! We also loved that there was no phone signal as a proper escape (there’s WiFi at the pub if you’re desperate for outside world contact).

Não gostou: Be prepared for midges (not the fault of the campsite but something to be aware of in that area!) They do sell citronella candles at the shop and allow fires not on the grass which help keep them at bay. The showers were a little walk away but that’s not the end of the world!

Gostou: Lovely quiet site with brilliant access to some beautiful walking and links to the rest of the western lakes. Nice level pitches. The pizza on Saturday night was delicious and we were very grateful to warm up with hot chocolates in the cafe after a wet walk in the mountains!

Não gostou: The midges were really hard work - take bug repellent and citronella candles! There was also no hot water for washing up or in the toilets and it’s an ongoing problem apparently. It would have been good to have been notified of this before arriving or been offered some discount on the fee.

Gostou: fantastic location for fantastic walking. lovely peacefull spot. well run by a lovely couple. not noisy. great pub (Yew Tree) within a few mins walk with great beer, food & staff. amazing pizza at farm Sat pm. cleanest showers i've seen on a campsite (couple of mins walk away). toilets & w/up facilities on site. perfect!

Gostou: Beautiful scenery, great clean facilities. Showers are great, warm and spacious though a slight walk from the campsite.

Não gostou: No hot water available at washing up point (June 24). The seating area shown in images is only available for guests at the cafe nearby and this is closed on Wednesdays & Thursdays.

Gostou: Our absolute favourite camp site in the lakes! Beautiful views including a little brook/river. Easy drive with ample parking. Super easy to get the bus into Keswick. Very clean/ well kept bathrooms and showers. Showers have proper hot water. Friendly owners. Usually very quiet. Fantastic pub a 5 minute walk away. Above ground fire pits allowed!

Não gostou: If I had any area for improvement, it would be hot water to the toilet taps near the camping site. But it is a minor niggle.

Dust off those hiking boots, for Seatoller’s surrounds are stacked with walking trails to suit all comers, from those seeking a gentle stroll through woodland and across heather-strewn fells to those in search of more vertical challenges. The beginning of a couple of the national park’s top climbs are easy to get to too – Great Gable (an hour and a half) and mighty Scafell (a couple of hours). Roam a little further afield for hikes on Catbells (15 minutes’ drive), around the Castlerigg stone circle (25 minutes) or on the slopes of Helvellyn (half an hour away, and a fine choice for mountain bikers too). If you’d like to have a crack at climbing in a controlled environment, try the via ferrata route at Honister Slate Mine, five minutes away, and worth a stop for an underground mine tour even if you’re not up to clinging on to crags. All sound a little tiring? Less demanding days out include the Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour) and the sculpture trail at Rydal Hall Gardens (40 minutes). It’s worth knocking around Keswick for a bit too, visiting the eccentric Puzzling Place exhibition and Derwent Pencil Museum or taking tipples at the town’s brewery. Alpaca trekking at Lingholm Estate and Whinlatter Forest are some other splendid days out.
