The people at Henley Park Wild Camping were serious when they named their site, for this really is rather like wild camping in secluded woodland. At this peaceful pop-up spot on the outskirts of Matlock in Derbyshire, you can pitch up wherever you like: in a quiet corner on your own or next to other campers around a firepit if you're feeling sociable. Whatever you decide, you’ll wake up to fine views and the sound of birds chirping in the morning. It's not completely wild here however – there are strings of solar fairy lights hung around the camp to help create a magical vibe, and a bunch of facilities to make life easy. These include running water (running off a silent generator, which is only on until 10pm), a washing-up area, loos and charging points for phones. On a Sunday, you can walk to Tansley Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale (20 minutes) to have a nose around stalls selling anything from local Bakewell tarts to ready-made curries. A popular café two minutes' walk away is known for its tasty Sunday lunch and sausage baps to get you going in the morning. As well as walking and cycling, there’s fishing for rainbow trout at Ogston Reservoir (five minutes’ drive), plus plenty of culture: investigate Derbyshire’s industrial past at Cromford Mills (15 minutes) or check out stately piles like Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes). Kids won’t be bored either, with all the thrill rides at Gulliver’s Kingdom (15 minutes) making for a fun-filled day out.

Recomenda-se que os hóspedes tragam consigo uma lanterna de boa qualidade, uma vez que algumas áreas do local não têm boa iluminação.

Gostou: Campsite was really nice with some nice quite and private spots as well some larger spots for bigger tents or a group. If you pick the right spot you can't actually see another tent. The bar / TV area was a real added bonus and it had plenty of undercover seating and the kids loved playing pool on the small table. Toilets and showers were good, but only a couple for the whole site. The owners were welcoming and polite.

Não gostou: Not a dislike, but the entrance to the site could be more tidy (it's quite far from the actual camping area so can't see it once on the site). There's an old porta cabin there, which has seen better days and some site rubbish. Just does not give the best first impression when entering, what really is, a very nice site.

Gostou: The venue was a great little retreat, with friendly staff, and camping folk. Really good atmosphere, would definitely go again.

Não gostou: They were too friendly and we got drunk before pitching the tent. It made it very hard, but maybe that was our bad decisions catching up with us lol.

Gostou: You can pick any pitch ranging from woodland to large grass pitch to the gem on top of the hill with great views, there's potential for backping to a hammock camp.also if you don't fancy taking a tent you can hire tipi"s and other tents. There's warm showers and toilet facilities. And a bonus there's a superb bar and social area under cover. My wife is 100 % not a wild camper but wanted to stop another night with no electric, that has never happened in 23 years so this site must be special!. We met nearly all the family and they were the perfect hosts, very friendly helpful and talkative.

Não gostou: Nothing to dislike. Only thing was I only booked one night🤣

Gostou: Friendly, help people, unspoiled nature which the kids loved playing and exploring in woods on rope swings , making friends with other kids on the site. Nice little bar area with a tv, toilets & showers clean , little fire pits set up to use. I would definitely return it reminds me of my child no technology just out door fun .

Gostou: The owners Matt and Tracey were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. They also worked behind the bar so available for any questions if needed. The site was beautiful, lots of quiet little areas in woods to camp up instead of a plain field. Great views. Bar was brilliant, such a great idea and so chilled.

Não gostou: I must say I am not an experienced camper so for me personally the facilities were very basic but I guess the clue is in the name...wild camping!

At Matlock Farm Park (five minutes’ drive), the kids might not know what to do first: the pony rides, the enormous jumping pillow or the go-karts? There’s also a petting zoo where they can feed farmyard animals and meet more exotic creatures like alpacas, wallabies and meerkats. You can ride a vintage double-decker tram at Crich Tramway Village (10 minutes), with its recreated period setting. The route takes you past a leafy park with a bandstand and on to a picnic area with views of the Amber Valley. There’s also a collection of trams, starting from a horse-drawn model from the 1870s. Take a cable car to the Heights of Abraham (15 minutes), a hilltop estate with far-reaching views of the Derbyshire Dales. After your flight, you can go on a guided tour of two caverns, let the kids blow off some steam at the adventure playground or simply stroll along the shaded paths.
