All sorts of alfresco adventures await in the Brecon Beacons National Park – and folk staying at Open Fire Camping may just surmise that they’re in a mighty fine place to make the most of them. Begin walking directly from the site along a stunning waterfall trail with wild swimming. The site is also within easy reach of heaps of other walking trails (both leisurely strolls and mountain scrambles) and can consult the site’s handy collection of maps to ensure they don’t wander astray. If wild swimming is your thing, they can also point you towards the nicest locations. It’s a cracking location to chill out in, too (excellent news for those who’ve worn themselves out by day), as there's heaps of space around the site’s different levels to find a pitch that suits you. Set up as a group or pick a more private corner from which to admire the views over Cribarth and do some stargazing by night (you’re in an International Dark Sky Reserve here so there should be some spectacular starry displays, cloud permitting). Keen to keep a calm vibe on site, the owners here have kept facilities to just the essentials like wifi, toilets, showers, water and recycling. Firepits have been scattered around the site, and you can buy firewood here or bring your own. If you don’t have the energy to cook dinner, there are a couple of pubs in the little Powys village of Pen-y-cae, just under a mile away.

Gostou Such a Beautiful locations, host was very welcoming, once the sat nav figured out where I was going to rather easy to find. I actually quiet liked the fact that you can’t park next to your pitch, so weren’t getting disturbed by cars and doors shutting, I was in very good spot from my car, I believe most are only a stone throw away, next time will definitely stay for a couple of days rather than 1 night, loved the fact there was also wi-fi on site too

Não gostou The showers are rather small, however very clean and nice hot water, however wasn’t needed on this very hot weekend, it’s not the camp sites fault but be prepared for a bit of a drive to the four water falls, I believed that this was close by because that’s what pitch up said

Gostou Fantastic campsite. Very helpful host - advised re hikes and routes and helped us when our tent leaked in the rain. Clean toilet block. Very friendly chickens!

Não gostou Shower space perhaps a little on the small side, but good hot showers

Gostou Beautiful setting with plenty of spots to choose from. Unfortunately weather was pouring when we arrived and over night so we didn't get to appreciate all the wonderful campfire facilities and evening views but could tell they would have been spectacular. Waking up the next morning to blue sky's and mountain scapes was bliss. Toilet and shower block was clean and well stocked. Sink for fresh drinking water and washing up easily accessible on site. Wi-Fi was good especially as we had a wet evening. We didn't need to call on him during our stay but from arrival experience the owner was lovely, friendly and accommodating. Cute chickens!

Não gostou Pubs we're quite a long walk away. On a nice summers evening we might have made the effort but a wet evening after a full day of hiking meant it was too far for us to venture out on foot. Doesn't detract from the positives of the site though!

Gostou Its a beautiful location. Really nice pitches and Steve was really welcoming and helpful. He even lent me a map and recommended a local walk that was spectacular. All-in-all a totally positive experience....I will be back!

Gostou Beautiful setting, clean toilets & showers, drinking water available, reasonably priced. I had to raise an issue with the owners (not their fault at all) and they responded swiftly and were very accommodating.

Atrações locais

Getting out into the national park is a doddle – get your boots on for the hour-long hike to Henrhyd Waterfall, perhaps, or climb the Cribarth hill (Sleeping Giant) which overlooks the site. There are also riding stables a mile away. For something a bit more leisurely, take the 15-minute walk from site to Craig-y-Nos Country Park for a wander around the 40-acre park’s lake and meadows and a visit to Craig-y-Nos Castle and its listed theatre (once owned by famed opera singer Adelina Patti). A five-minute drive from the site takes you to the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, which has in the past been voted one of the UK’s best attractions – after you've delved underground, take the kids to the dino exhibit to see loads of life-sized model-sauruses. If you're yearning for a breath of sea air, it'll take you less than an hour to drive to the Gower Peninsula for some of the UK's best beaches.
