Ever fancied bedding down among a menagerie of meerkats, lemurs, goats, pigs, donkeys and a whole lot of other entertaining animals? Well, here’s your chance at Auchingarrich Wildlife Park. Of course, you won’t be actually pitching up in the animal pens – there’s a lovely wild-camping-style paddock set aside for guests, with great views over the ponds and the surrounding Perthshire countryside. You will, however, be able to buy tickets giving you unlimited access to the main wildlife park during the day, so you can pop in and meet the animals whenever you wish, spend some time in the soft play barn or let off some steam at the outdoor play area, the mini golf or the ride-on tractors. The wildlife park has a café that’s open during the day for mains, snacks, hot drinks and sweet treats (along with a kids’ menu and ice creams too), but guests are also welcome to use the campsite’s barbecue area for outdoor meals. Comrie and Crieff are both about 10 minutes’ drive away for supplies if you’re self catering. There’s plenty of space at this site, so kids can run about and families can play games; dogs are welcome too, but will need to be kept under control and on a lead at all times. In keeping with the wild-style vibe you’ll have access to compost toilets but please note there are no showers. You can hire firepits if you’d like to have a campfire evening.

Gostou Amazing place for our first camping trip. The children loved the animals and still talk about our trip so fondly.

Não gostou Walk to toilet and no shower. However, these will be installed for our visit again next summer.

Gostou The kids loved that they could access the park at all hours.

Lots of space on the camping field.

Toilet facilities were in good condition.

Não gostou Walk to toilets. I never did find the compost toilet and the 10min walk seemed fine when we booked it but wasn't so great in the rain.

The camping field is on an incline.

Gostou The couple who own it are just absolutely lovely, kind and very helpful, as well as all the other staff that work there. The animals are well looked after and have huge areas to roam around. As well as the wildlife park there is numerous other areas to entertain children including the outdoor park which is huge, a soft play and mini golf, along with another desperate barn with other soft play style activities. The food was lovely in the cafe. The views are just amazing and in a perfect location to travel around a little. Will definitely be returning next year and bringing more family along with us.

Gostou Great stay for families, loads for kids to do. Staff were really friendly and the cafe was lovely

Não gostou I didn’t dislike anything but if there were showers and toilets at the camp site it would make the place 10/10 as we would have stayed for longer.

Gostou Great views, lots for kids to do, plenty of tent pitches, welcoming owners, and brilliant cafe.

Não gostou Would be good to get the composting toilets going again in the campsite as it can be quite far for females to walk up to the cafe area late at night

Gostou The campsite had a few layers of pitches, which meant we could choose a quieter pitch for a decent night's sleep. Being on site with the animals and the play area accessible in the evening as well as all day was great.

Não gostou The cafe food was lovely, and I assume they have high operating costs, which meant the prices were a little higher than expected.

Once you've met the animals on site, how about taking off to see some native wildlife? The big birds might be the main attraction at Argaty Red Kites (35 minutes’ drive), but you can also spot things like roe deer and red squirrels as well as seeing what you can see from the bird hides. Some time exploring the scenery should be on the cards too – perhaps a waterside stroll at Loch Earn (15 minutes’ drive, and also home to a good watersports centre), a woodland wander to reach Doune Castle (half an hour) or a steep climb up Callander Crags (45 minutes). Drummond Castle Gardens (15 minutes) is also a good spot for green-fingered types. If the kids are in the mood for more activity, take them along to Action Glen (15 minutes) for days of quad biking, segway riding and scrambling along treetop trails. And if you’ve not got the kids? Well, there’s always the Glenturret Distillery (15 minutes)…
