If you quite fancy the idea of wild camping but aren’t sure you’ll take to the idea of abandoning such things as toilets, there's a great compromise to be had in the form of Camp Wild at Burrow Hill Farm. This secluded site on a Devon hillside has all the atmosphere of a proper wild camping location: it’s completely off grid (so you’ll need to bring torches), with just a couple of large pitches and well away from any roads. You can pick your own camping spot here, but as the pitches are not accessible by car your kit will be transported for you. After that, you’re left to your own devices to forage for wood, build your campfire, or explore the footpaths that can be accessed from the farm. You’ll be sharing your space with lots of wildlife, so sit or stroll quietly and you may spot badgers and deer in the field or buzzards, ravens and swallows in the sky overhead. And even if you’re not lucky on that front, there’s many a pretty thing to see among the wildflowers, the hedgerows and the woodlands. Later on, the dark skies lend themselves well to nights of stargazing, and you may see the bats at play in the woods or hear the odd owl hooting. And those amenities? There’s a portable toilet, a solar shower tent and a camping kitchen unit for each pitch, and you can get water from a spring (piped from the main house supply). There's also an electric vehicle charging point available for use on a metered basis. All the bits you need for your barbecue or campfire can be sourced at the supermarket in Hemyock, a mile away along the footpath or lane (it’s also got a pub if you’d rather have your food cooked for you…)

Gostou This campsite was absolutely fantastic! Caroline and Chris were wonderful hosts, fabulous with the children and so helpful, even bringing up a basket of tea and coffee when we arrived. The pitch is up quite a hill but there is an easier route available. Being at the top of the hill gave incredible views and made it feel very secluded. Also there was great phone signal which you don't always get camping! There is a footpath down the back of the pitch which didn't cause any issues, we saw a handful of people walking over the week. The facilities were better than expected, and Chris and Caroline worked hard refreshing facilities everyday. The area was great for exploring, a good base for places such as Sidmouth and Honiton. They even have an EV charger with a really good rate which we made use of. The children enjoyed foraging (ample blackberries available!) and sitting round the campfire. We had a really fabulous week and would highly recommend this site! I'm sure we'll be back!

Gostou What an absolute gem. Close enough to wild camping to be wild but with enough amenities to provide the essentials ! A portable toilet that is emptied daily , pots and pans , a firepit and a bbq all supplied. I would recommend bringing a gas stove for everyday cooking .what a blessing to be without technology as we camped with our grandkids aged 10,8 and 4 years old, who loved searching for sticks and logs for the firepit, climbing trees and finding an abundance of baby frogs. The lack of any light pollution meant that stargazing by the embers of a burning fire was the perfect ending to our awesome day. The hosts were very welcoming and at hand if needed but never intrusive . We chose the lower pitch ( as I have vertigo) which still gave us amazing views across the blackdown hills . Access to the footpath into the village was easily accessible and even had the opportunity to geocache along the way. The village has a great shop and a little play park .

Gostou A great site for wild camping, with more facilities than expected (washing facilities, fire pit, picnic bench, toilet).
Lots of wild life to see esp at dawn and dusk - deer, owls, bats.
Lovely owners who are very helpful and give a lift up the hill with your kit in their gator/side by side.

Gostou Thank you so much for such a lovely stay. Everything was perfect for the two nights we were there. The campsite overlooks the most fabulous views & we had a picnic bench, fire pit & outdoor kitchen area with tap, along with a pop up privacy tent, solar shower & camping toilet all provided. The pitch is surrounded by nature, with fields, meadows & woods all available to explore. We saw deer & bats & waking up to nothing but bird song was amazing. Very peaceful location, with everything we needed. Christopher & Caroline were exceptional hosts, telling us about the wildlife and local walks we could do. Great location for hikes to Wellington Monument or Culmstock Beacon which are both beautiful places to visit. Great local pub & shop about twenty minutes walk. Would highly recommend & we will definitely be back. Thank you

Burrow Hill Farm is within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are plenty of ways to explore some of the scenery that earned the area its title. Set out straight from your tent to get going on local footpaths, perhaps to the Wellington monument or up to Culmstock Beacon for some smashing views. For walks further afield, head to Exmoor National Park (45 minutes’ drive) or head shore-wards to the South West Coast Path. Burrow Hill is fairly central in Devon so it’s about an hour’s drive to the north coast or 45 minutes south to the fossil-filled Jurassic Coast. Time for a bit of a sit down? Head to the beach in Lyme Regis or Sidmouth or take a ride on the tramway in Seaton (all 40 minutes). Devon Railway Centre and Knightshayes Court (both 35 minutes) are also good ideas for days out nearby, as is a wander around Exeter (40 minutes).
