Ah, Croyde – the mere mention of this lovely little village is liable to perk up the ears of surfer types, who’ve no doubt heard about the splendid waves around this corner of Devon. Those same surfer types (along with those who’d like to learn the art of standing up on water, and anyone else that’s keen on the coast) should also find their ears pricking up at the offerings of Camping @ Croyde Bay, a friendly site in the village centre. The waters at Croyde beach, around 400 metres away, are famed as being fab for both keen surfers and novices, and that also makes this area a top pick for family holidays. The well-established site is a family-friendly place too, in a spot that’s easily walkable to the village’s shops and pubs but quiet enough for a good night’s kip. Facilities include purpose-built toilets and showers, and a much-loved ladies' dressing room with a mirror, power points, hair dryers and hair straighteners. There is an additional hot outdoor shower for sandy wetsuits, a drying area, plenty of fresh drinking water and a washing-up area for dealing with dishes. Guests can also use the communal freezers and mobile phone charging points. As for the local area, it’s not all about Croyde: Putsborough beach (another corker) is also within walking distance, and it’s a couple of miles to Saunton for more sandy times and a gorgeous golf course.

Gostou Beautiful views of the surrounding fields. The shower block was just fantastic. Modern and clean. Plenty of room for showers and washing up facilities. Also really appreciated the little basket of toiletries and hairdryers/straightener's in the women’s - really nice touch. Our pitch was also pretty level.

Não gostou Wish I had read more depth on the owner of this facility. Although we didn’t have an overly bad experience of him - he did come across unfriendly and intimidating. Really disliked the rule of no music. I appreciate his rules and some people prefer it - but majority vote for me would be that camping and music go hand in hand. So we really noticed that missing on our trip. The rule was far too strict and should be changed to time limitations - not during the day when everyone is off at the beach so wouldn’t have harmed anyone having a background radio on. I’m unsure what scene the owner is trying to achieve considering the ‘no noise at all’ rule doesn’t rule out noisy children.

We understand that everyone has their own preferences, and we’re always happy to accommodate most needs. If some guests prefer louder entertainment, there are plenty of other wonderful campsites around Croyde where that’s more the vibe.

Gostou Large pitch with space for awning, and to sit and have dryer for wetsuits. Walking past other sites in Croyde they appeared more crowded and more sloping. Very clean.

Não gostou Outside shower was not “hot” as promised but well used non the less. Great to get sand off feet and wetsuits after walk back from beach.

Gostou Very friendly welcome onto site on arrival, nicely positioned for ease of walk into Croyde and also to the beach. Facilities were modern, new and well maintained, good size pitches which were level.

Não gostou Little noisey from traffic first thing in the morning and people walking back to other campsites at night. (Not from this site though)

Gostou The location of the site is great, the facilities are really well done, big shower areas and dressing room area in the ladies, lovely washing up area, freezers are a great touch for BBQ essentials or ice packs. Drying area for wetsuits also. Site is compact but well maintained. Great recycling area, WIFI, charging areas & coffee on site! Site was kept exceptionally clean at all times.

Não gostou Disruptive/rude family staying next to us, was reported to reception and feedback was very well accepted.

Would love to see a shelf above the sinks in the ladies loos to put our tooth brushes, make up bags on rather than on the sink

Gostou Excellent facilities. Great showers and even hairdryers and straighteners. Coffee machine in reception. Board hire - bodyguard £5 per day.

Ample sized pitch. Location is good - short walk to centre. Very quiet so peaceful nights sleep. Free WiFi.

Gostou Great location - 15mins walk to the beach, under 10mins into the village.
Well-organised, very clean, relaxed environment. Nice wash block.
Quiet thanks to no music rule.
Free phone charging in reception was a real bonus.
Decent view of the hillside.

Gostou Great location. Nice short walk to village or in the other direction to the beach. Nice clean site. Not too big. Good sized pitch even with awning. Toilet blocks are fab! Nice touch with the hairdryers and straighteners! Lovely friendly people who run it.

So… the beach? Thought so. Croyde’s one of those fab places that’s equally good for a paddle, a swim or a surf. Experienced boarding types can usually find some good waves down here, and there are shallower sections where newbies can find their feet (with the help of one of the village’s surf schools, ideally). For a rest from the waves, take a walk out to Baggy Point (about 45 minutes on foot), join a game at the village’s beach volleyball school or drive for 10 minutes to the rural pursuits at Borough Farm Sheepdog and Falconry Displays. Alternatively, make it all about the sea with a coasteering day from Croyde, a ride on the beach at Woolacombe or a sea safari from Ilfracombe (both 15 minutes’ drive). The beaches at Putsborough and Saunton Sands are both about five minutes’ drive away and there are some cracking walks to be had on the South West Coast Path around here too.
