It’s not often that you find a campsite with a gorgeous ruined abbey within walking distance, but Wethercote Farm Campsite is that rare beast. Surrounded by amazing open views, this relaxed and peaceful spot is an hour on foot from the atmospheric remains of Rievaulx Abbey. The camping pitches are located on the fields of a beef, sheep and arable farm fringing the North York Moors National Park. There’s always plenty going on in neighbouring fields and there are lots of animals around, including Herdwick lambs in spring and the resident farm dogs. Because of the other animals, your well-behaved canine companions are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Facilities around the camping fields include a shower and toilet block with hot running water, a washing-up shed and rubbish and recycling areas. Drinking water taps are scattered around the site and firepits are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The lovely market towns of Helmsley and Thirsk are both roughly 15 minutes’ drive away for stocking up on goodies from the supermarkets, and a short drive in pretty much any direction will lead you to a delightful country pub (often with a good food menu).

Gostou Beautiful site, quiet and clean facilities. Owner was very friendly and explained the site on arrival. Great location for walking and access to Thirsk. The available fire pits and wood were an added bonus. Looking forward to visiting again.

Gostou Well maintained site with adequate facilities. Toilet and shower clean and washing up area tidy. Great views and walks around and about.

Não gostou Being in an elevated position the site is exposed to the elements with no trees or bushes. It was windy and maybe a site in the valley would have been less so.
Unfortunately there was a group of loud and foul mouthed lads that seemed to be unsupervised as the site has a policy of no unaccompanied under 18s, they were 14 to 16s I would have guessed.

Gostou Very nice welcome and just what I was hoping for. Nice and remote but close enough to anything you might need with a short drive to Thirsk. A busy working farm and that adds to the experience. Good showers and I will definitely visit again.

Gostou Very large pitch with facilities close by, the children loved the occasional chicken running round, and the sheep in the next field. The facilities were spot-on & it was great value for money. Nice quiet site in a pretty dark spot too if you like stargazing.

Não gostou The cockerels woke the children earlier than I would have liked, but we were staying on a working farm so I should have anticipated an early start!

Gostou Beautiful views, sitting out at night with a firepit looking at the stars which are amazing as there's so little light pollution, buying fresh eggs for breakfast... just everything. This was our second visit to the site as we'd discovered it as a stoppoff on the way back from Scotland and it was every bit as great as we hoped. Fantastic walking in the area and beautiful historic sites to visit such as Riveaux Abbey and Helmsley Castle (great walk between the two).

Wethercote Farm Campsite is a handy overnight stop for hikers on the Cleveland Way National Trail (15 minutes’ walk), and within a five-minute drive you are at the top of steep Sutton Bank for views of the mid-19th-century chalk Kilburn White Horse; on clear day you’ll also have panoramas right across the Vale of York. At the Sutton Bank National Park Centre (five minutes’ drive), there’s a café, small store and bike hire as well as lots of visitor information about this spectacular part of the world. You can walk to Rievaulx Abbey (an hour’s walk) for a wander around the lovely cloisters, and then move on to Rievaulx Terrace (another 20 minutes) for views back over the abbey grounds. York (50 minutes) is a treasure trove of history, from its Gothic Minster to the medieval cobbled street of The Shambles, lined with dinky souvenir shops. There’s more history to be discovered at Castle Howard (half an hour), the setting for many a TV drama, with tours of the house and gardens designed by John Vanbrugh. Thirsk has also had its moment of TV fame as home of ‘The Yorkshire Vet’ documentary series and The World Of James Herriot (15 minutes), with displays in a vet’s restored 1940s home and surgery – and for a day full of fun on adrenaline rides, head for Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes).
