If you can prise the kids away from the pools, reward them with a visit to PortAventura (15 minutes’ drive), Spain’s biggest theme park and packed with rollercoasters, pirate-themed ships and gentle rides for younger kids, as well as the adrenaline-inducing Hurakan Condor drop tower. The seaside city of Tarragona (25 minutes) has an enticing mixture of Roman sites – a seafront amphitheatre and aqueduct among them – as well as a towering cathedral with spectacular Gothic carvings on its façade. After a day’s time travel through Spanish history, put your feet up in a seafront restaurant for a glass of wine and tapas snacks. Fancy a change of pace? Spend time exploring peaceful countryside in the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre (half an hour), which offers wetland hikes around the lagoons, sand dunes to run around on and the chance to spot hundreds of pink flamingos in flight over the rice fields. For a day of hiking amid craggy mountains, follow the trail up to Mare de Deu de la Roca Sanctuary (15 minutes) for its historic church and spectacular views back to the coast.
