Pony rides, pools and pastry making on site, and two of France’s top-rated theme parks within an hour’s drive… the kids are going to go gaga over this one. (And as happy kids generally result in happy parents, that sounds like a thumbs up all round, n’est-çe-pas?)
And where is this most happy state of affairs? Get yourself along to Le Domaine de la Barre five minutes’ drive from Gourgé, a place that'll meet with approval from small sorts and grownups alike: there are 56 hectares of land to play with on this rural farm estate for starters...
The lengthy list of leisure facilities starts with a couple of pools (an outdoor one with waterslide and a heated indoor one to ensure clouds don't interfere with the splashing), and also takes in a 12-hole miniature golf course, a trampoline, a toy library, a playground and all the kit you need for games of table tennis, football and basketball. There’s also a large lake for canoeing and catch-and-release fishing.
Come summertime, the offerings extend to organised activities too: grownups can calm their busy brains at meditation sessions while les enfants ride ponies or learn local cooking techniques. Should the small sorts not quite gain enough skills to create a whole family dinner, you’re welcome to light up a barbie (picking up supplies in the village or the bigger supermarket in Parthenay, 20 minutes away).

This is a strategic location to settle in if you’re up for theme parks: Le Domaine de la Barre is roughly halfway between Puy du Fou and Futuroscope, and around an hour’s drive from each. Pick one or make time for both, as each is excellent and (whisper it if the kids are in earshot) educational – there’s a history theme running through the rides and shows at Puy du Fou and a science one at Futuroscope.
If it’s the animal world that piques the tiddlers’ interest, take them off to the equally fab Bioparc de Doué la Fontaine an hour’s drive away, where the animals live in specially created natural landscapes carved into a prehistoric rock quarry. Fancy a crack at spotting creatures in the wild? Also within an hour’s drive is the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park, where you may spot all sorts of colourful birds (and wild horses) as you paddle through the marshes on a boat trip.
For history without added theme park rides, it’s worth a meander around the medieval centre of Parthenay, 20 minutes away, as well as trips to the fairytale-like Château d’Oiron (35 minutes), the ruins of Château de Coudray-Salbart (40 minutes) or the Renaissance Château Coulonges sur l’Autize, 50 minutes away.
