Net yourself a nature-filled hol in Loire-et-Cher at Le Pré Karvain; this picture of a site is set in woodland with an enclosure where a couple of goats and a llama are free to roam. And if these creatures aren't enough to appease avid animal enthusiasts, the grounds are a 20-minute drive from the pandas et al at popular ZooParc de Beauval.
A restaurant at this glamping site means you needn't venture far for food once you return from seeing the sights, and a supermarket is less than a 10-minute drive away in Contres if you're planning on cooking for yourself. Markets selling French fare and wineries litter the Loire region too, so you'll never be too far from places to pick up picnic treats.
While foraging for eats in this fairytale-like region, you’re bound to notice many a famed château: there's the dreamy Chambord (40 minutes), the biggest in the area, and Cheverny (15 minutes), known as the inspiration behind Marlinspike Hall in the Tintin books. To mix a little agriculture into your architectural wanderings, Chaumont-sur-Loire (half an hour from the site) and its well-known annual garden festival are open for visits from around April to November; other châteaux less than a 40-minute drive include Chenonceaux, Amboise and Beauregard among others.
If the kids start tiring of all the castle hopping, it might be time to turn towards the Loire's other available activities: having hols here mean you can set off on trips ranging from gliding on the river in a classic futreau boat to heading out on horseback along pretty paths.

If walks are what you're after while staying at Le Pré Karvain, the region’s 400 kilometres of footpaths and bike trails mean you'll have more than a fair few to choose from. Not sure whether cycling's permitted in certain areas? Look out for the Accueil Vélo signs then pedal to some of the local lakes and rivers for wild swimming when you need to cool off.
If you've a love for lazing, Montrichard's sandy river beach is less than half an hour by car from site and also has summer entertainment, a play area and a kids' riding school. Canoeing, fishing and rowing can all be embarked on around here as well, and if you're feeling really adventurous a hot-air ballooning company will take you high up in the sky within a 20-minute drive from the park.
