Fancy hols that fuse back-to-nature vibes with a swish luxury setup? Then make tracks for Domaine Roccas, a family-friendly glampsite five minutes’ drive (about three and a half kilometres) from the Lot-et-Garonne village of Port-Sainte-Marie and the banks of the Garonne river. This is agritourism at its finest: the site is on a working organic farm where the owners breed goats, angora and alpacas. Local mohair and alpaca wool products can be bought on site, and guests can sign up for free tours of the farm, meeting some of the alpacas along the way. Once this light activity is out of the way, settle in on the loungers next to the pool or take a dip to refresh. Need a tad more zen? The on-site massage room beckons, with a full range of massage oils to choose from and a qualified in-house masseuse to work those knots out. The site is on the slopes above the Garonne, making this a top pitstop for those travelling the length of the river valley. The owners have made sure to make the site welcoming for cyclists and bikers, and there’s a train station in Port-Sainte-Marie, linking the village with Agen, Aiguillon and Bordeaux. Eats are all local, of course: a daily breakfast basket is included with every stay, and picnic baskets can be ordered prior to arrival for dining at your leisure.

This is the famed Lot, so plenty of spectacular châteaux are within easy reach, starting with explorations of the grounds at Château de Trenquelléon, 10 minutes’ drive from base. When there’s time for another, make it Château-Musée Henri IV (25 minutes away in Nérac), a 15th-century former royal residence housing a permanent exhibition on the history of the kings who called it home. Tastes for history not confined to les châteaux? Learn about the history of the humble prune at Ferme et Musée du Pruneau (25 minutes), where guests don the proverbial shoes of a pruniculturist and sample the produce, then chug into the past on the Pays d’Albret tourist railway from Nérac (25 minutes) to Mézin. Guests of a more urban bent may prefer to travel to Agen (30 minutes), where a cathedral, chapels, museums and parks are to be explored. Further afield, it’s an hour and 20 minutes to Bordeaux, where there’s plenty of shopping to be had, as well as a host of museums and gardens and the City of Wine to wander about. Not enough wine? The site’s 15 minutes from tours and tastings (in English or French) at Les Vignerons de Buzet. For more kid-pleasing stays, Walibi Sud-Ouest theme park and Lud’O Parc waterpark are both within about 25 minutes.
