Got your sights set on staying at this spot purely for a rest in the countryside rather than to shuffle around Shropshire’s historic sites? Chill out on the grounds with a picnic, perhaps blending a few leisure activities into the break by visiting Lilleshall’s golf club and sports centre (20 minutes’ walk away). For longer wanders, head out on a pleasant four-mile walk down a private tree-lined drive to an award-winning pub near Newport. Feel free to take the dog – canine family members are permitted at this park. Parking is available next to your pitch, so there’ll be no need to lug your luggage far.

Wander in Weston Park (10 minutes) next – set in the memorably named village of Weston-under-Lizard – with its fancy 17th-century mansion and landscaping by famed gardener Capability Brown before embarking on a lengthier amble up to Wrekin Hill (25 minutes).
