Now’s your chance – at Camping Le Château de Rochetaillée in the French Alps, stays are to be had amid the three wooded acres of a 19th-century stately home with stunning views of Oisans’ mountain peaks and famed passes – including Alpe d'Huez – to gaze at from the grounds.
The age of this place belies how modern the amenities are – it has a fitness room, a sauna and a miniature golf course – although the restaurant, which serves local specialities, has a traditional feel as it’s set inside the stone house’s old vaulted wine cellar.
Outdoors is where guests like to be, though, with the summits and wide-open spaces of Écrins National Park – the biggest in France – to stare at before traipsing off on hikes around its glaciers, springs, lakes, waterfalls and streams.
If you still have energy left after explores, the site has a climbing wall, table tennis, volleyball court, pétanque court, basketball court and football pitch. For the kids, the spacious swimming pool area has waterslides, and there’s ample sunbathing room and a whirlpool for the adults.
As you might already have guessed, this Isère park is family-friendly – its entertainment programme includes activities for the entire clan, from sports tournaments to kids' club, and there's an indoor swimming pool for splash time as well. Off base, thrilling activities for all ages to take part in include paragliding, ziplining, horse riding and white-water rafting.

From Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Geneva: take the motorway to Grenoble. Come off at Exit 8 signposted 'Stations de l'Oisans' and follow the RN 91 towards Briançon.

Lokale attraksjoner
Oisans is the land of the eagle, chamois and ibex, as well as legendary peaks like Meije (40 minutes’ drive) and the Massif des Écrins (55 minutes), so adventures here are all about animal spotting and mountain climbing. The area has six valleys to venture towards – Le Vénéon, Sarenne, Lignarre and the Eau d’Olle among them – in search of rushing rivers, traditional villages and steep peaks too.
Travelling around with a bike? Speed off on one of the ‘balcony roads’ in the high passes or challenge yourself to taking on the 21 notorious hairpin bends leading towards Alpe d’Huez (an hour’s ride) on a winding road that’s been included in some especially tricky stages of the Tour de France.
If you reckon you’d rather stick close to home, head to Lac du Verney (just over five minutes’ drive) for wanders beside the gloriously green water and to try out some aquatic sports at the activity centre.
