Guildford (15 minutes' drive) has a wonderfully wide range of things to do: bowling, cinemas, high street shopping, a regular farmers' market and a castle are all available if you're planning day trips to the town centre. In the surrounding countryside, meanwhile, you could meander around the stately grounds of Loseley Park (15 minutes) or benefit from some artsy inspiration at Watts Gallery (20 minutes), where there's also an artists' village. This part of the country also has its fair share of golf courses – Cranleigh Golf and Country Club (five minutes) and Bramley Golf Club (10 minutes) both have well-tended links to try out if you're after a genteel afternoon. But wilder times are also on offer if you head to the segways and treetop trails at Alice Holt Go Ape (35 minutes) or the big, high-adrenaline rides at Thorpe Park (45 minutes). While there's also much to appreciate inland, it's worth bearing in mind that this site is an hour's drive from coastal spots like Brighton (for bohemian vibes), Chichester (for Roman ruins) and Worthing (a classic seaside town with a pier and lido).
