Being surrounded by the mountains of Cozia National Park is, naturally, a scenic place to be – but Camping Gradina cu Flori manages to make things even better with its location on the banks of the Lotru river.
That combination of mountains and river adds up to a rather lovely backdrop for this backyard campsite in the Vâlcea region – and, as you might imagine, the surroundings are full of options for outdoor activities too, from hilly hikes and mountain bike rides to more leisurely days of fishing in local rivers and lakes. This is also a handy location for heading out to historic sites such as the area’s monasteries, or for day trips to the well-preserved medieval city of Sibiu.
Your base for all of these activities is a friendly site that combines rural character with modern comfort, all surrounded by the lush greenery of a well-maintained garden. Handy facilities for guests include bike hire, a shared kitchen area and an old barn that’s been converted into a bathroom block with showers and toilets.
There’s a laidback atmosphere on site, with kids and dogs welcome and campfires or barbecues also permitted – pick up supplies at the shops in Brezoi, five minutes’ drive away and also home to a couple of restaurants.

Op deze camping zijn hondenrassen/kruisingen die in de 'lijst met hoog-risico honden op agressief gedrag' zijn opgenomen, niet toegestaan (zoals de pitbullterriër, tosa, Argentijnse dog en fila brasileiro). Ook de volgende rassen zijn niet welkom: de staffordshire-bulterriër, Amerikaanse staffordshireterriër, rottweiler en mastiff.- Auto's/motoren zijn niet toegestaan op de staplaats/bij de accommodatie. Deze moeten worden geparkeerd op de daarvoor bestemde plekken.
- Minstens één lid van het gezelschap dient 18 of ouder te zijn.
- Houd er rekening mee dat de toiletten/douches uniseks zijn.

Bring your boots along – you’ll need them for all the scenic trails around Cozia National Park and up into the Căpățâni mountains. Of course, you could choose to tour by bike instead if you prefer, either by bringing your own mountain bikes along or by hiring electric bikes nearby to give you a bit of extra oomph on the hills.
For a more leisurely time, there’s fishing along the Lotru river or in nearby Brădișor Lake (15 minutes’ drive) and Mălaia Lake (25 minutes) – or you might choose to soak in the thermal waters of Căciulata and Călimănești (both 20 minutes). Alternatively, your hosts can give you other ideas nearby such as helping you organise horse riding in Nedeea Vâlceană or pointing you towards places to find traditional local meals.
Dip into the area’s culture and history with visits to Cozia Monastery (15 minutes) and Turnu Monastery (20 minutes), the ethnographic museum Muzeul Satului Vâlcean (35 minutes) and the intriguing Ocnele Mari Salt Mine (50 minutes), converted into a space for wellbeing events and activities. A trip to Sibiu (an hour) is a fine plan too, as it’s got lots of fantastic historic buildings to visit.
