If you fancy an open-air dip, there are natural swimming lakes in Asperen (five minutes’ drive) and Herwijnen (10 minutes); when the weather’s not up to scratch, head for the indoor swimming pool in Leerdam (five minutes). Needing other inspiration for wet-weather days? Try a visit to the aquariums ful of tropical fish at Aqua Zoo Leerdam or a tour of the interactive Glassworks Leerdam. Lovely local towns to reconnoitre include canal-side Gorinchem (20 minutes), with its largely intact medieval fortress and river cruises from the Buiten de Waterpoort. Historic Culemborg (also 20 minutes) is another fortified settlement with free self-guided walks through its 14th-century centre lined with ornate gabled houses.
