You’ve seen San Marino take part in international sporting competitions and the Eurovision Song Contest; now it’s time to visit. And when you do, Lodge Holidays at Centro Vacanze San Marino is a top spot for a family getaway in this mountainous micro-state completely surrounded by Italy.
This lush site on a landscape terraced hill in the village of Cailungo, just outside San Marino’s capital (also called San Marino; 10 minutes’ drive), should be a hit with the younger members of the family, with a playground, a petting zoo with inquisitive donkeys and goats, and a kids’ club organising events such as games and children’s discos. And that’s without considering the outdoor pool, with its waterslides (and a paddling area), and the sports fields – from tennis courts to a volleyball area – for family tournaments.
Accommodation is in wooden lodges with a well-equipped kitchen area, private bathroom and luxurious beds (with mosquito nets). Each lodge also has its own terrace with a hammock, sun loungers and a table for alfresco meals, which you can grab from the restaurant if you don’t fancy doing your own shopping (the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away) and cooking.
When it’s time to discover the local area, consider hiring bikes on site (you’re on the eastern slopes of the Apennines here, so an electric bike is probably best to avoid burning thighs on your return). Climb up Monte Titano, with its distinctive medieval towers, and continue on to Parco di Montecchio, where peacock and deer enclosures sit among woodland.

The awe-inspiring Fortress of San Leo (half an hour’s drive), dramatically situated atop a rocky spur, is known as the place where notorious alchemist and adventurer the Count of Cagliostro was imprisoned in the late 1790s.
Head to the coast for a range of theme parks. At Italia in Miniatura (half an hour), you can feel like a giant as you wander among miniature replicas of famed Italian landmarks, from Rome’s Colosseum to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Fiabilandia (35 minutes) caters for young children with magic castles and themed train rides through various areas, while Aquafan (35 minutes) is a massive water park with long winding waterslides and a wave pool.
The Adriatic Riviera (half an hour) has well-equipped beaches where you can hire sun loungers, umbrellas, pedal boats and more for a day on the sand (or the water), and beach bars and restaurants serve cool drinks and freshly caught seafood. In Rimini, there are madcap antics ahead at BoaBay, a massive inflatable adventure course just off the shore.
