Take a good long look at this lovely setting on the edge of Mamers, next to a swimming lake and a public pool… and then take a look at that wider map, which has Parc naturel régional du Perche on one side and Forêt de Perseigne on the other side. That’s Camping Les Portes du Perche for you. Conveniently positioned within walking distance of the town’s shops, restaurants and other amenities, it’s also well-based for all sorts of outdoors pursuits. Where to begin? First, get to know all the little pieces in the immediate vicinity. The site is next to a free, covered public swimming pool and a supervised swimming pond. There’s also a multi-sports ground and play areas for children a short walk away. For a fee, horse-riding, tennis and miniature golf are accessible around the lake. And as a bonus, the town centre is just 15 minutes’ walk away. Further afield, tackle the hiking trails in Forêt de Perseigne (around 20 minutes’ drive away) or cycle on established local greenways. If you’d rather explore on horseback, there’s an equestrian centre 200 metres from the site. At the crossroads of the A11 and A28 motorways, the site is well-positioned for getting to other sublime destinations in Pays de la Loire. Camping Les Portes du Perche is half an hour’s drive from Alençon and 55 minutes from Le Mans.

Ik was blij met: Lovely lake nearby Big pitches

Ik was niet zo blij met: Toilets were not very clean, no sanitary bins, no toilet seats, no toilet paper, no hand wash. We has lasagne in the cafe it was horrendous. It was in a tiny microwave carton and was absolutely solid none of us could eat it was awful!!! Nightmare to find if following satnav it takes you to the wrong end of the campsite

Ik was blij met: The site was clean and we were given a pitch very quickly when we arrived. There was a snack bar and a lovely lake. We walked into town for dinner as this was just an overnight stay and the campsite was conveniently placed for this. Would not hesitate to recommend or use this site again.

Ik was blij met: Such a peaceful, quiet campsite with plenty of shade. I could choose my own pitch. Right next to a lake for swimming and close to the town.

Ik was blij met: Well positioned, pretty area, good for fishing people, walkers and cyclists and overnight stops.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Shop/cafe of no use for morning travellers, not open till late. Would have been very useful for coffee/tea etc ie petit dejeunie. No Wi-Fi. No loo rolls

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

To Bellême (15 minutes’ drive), perhaps, for a town among the woodlands and countryside? Be sure to peer inside the church, which was reconstructed in 17th-century style from its 15th-century original and features an adorable off-centre clock. Lace-making traditions are what bring many to Alençon (half an hour). The town is UNESCO-listed for its arts and culture. There’s a fine arts museum as well as 15th-century architecture to check out while you’re pottering around there. La Ferté-Bernard (35 minutes) is a strong contender for some of the finest views around this region - and that’s saying something, with such strong competition. The Huisne river runs past the medieval buildings and canals also separate some of the streets. Le Mans (55 minutes) may be furthest away out of the bunch, but it’s got lots to occupy your hours, including a museum on the city’s famed motor race, the race track and an old town.
