You’ll soon fall for the sheer loveliness of the untamed Loire-Atlantique region when you stay at Camping de Prigny, a family-friendly campsite 20 minutes’ walk from Côte de Jade beaches and the lively coastal resort of Les Moutiers-en-Retz. Along with its spacious grass pitches, modern accommodation and easy beach access, this peaceful corner of paradise has much more going for it. There’s a heated swimming pool with a retractable roof and paddling pool for toddlers, plus a securely fenced play area with climbing frames, trampoline and bouncy castle to take care of the kids. Organised family activities like treasure hunts and pétanque competitions take place in summer, along with foodie-centric themed evenings (mussels and chips dinners, oyster tastings), and there’s a snack bar as well as a bread depot for daily breakfast baguettes and pastries. Evenings can be full of karaoke sessions and quiz games, or alternatively you can stow yourself away quietly in the library with a good book. Any cyclists among you will doubtless perk up when you hear that the site holds the ‘Accueil Vélo’ label – and that it’s right on the Vélodyssée bike route wending its way down the west coast from Brittany to the French Basque Country.

Ecolodge huurtent 2 slaapkamers

Ik was blij met: We enjoyed our stay in one of the 3 eco-lodges, a tent equipped with beds and a kitchen, which was located down a quiet cul-de-sac with a handy shortcut making it close to all the amenities. The kitchen was well equipped for our self-catering meals and though the living space was small, there was a covered bench on the porch and a picnic table where we ate every day. The site though a little crowded on first impression was well landscaped with trees providing shade and some lovely flowering plants and shrubs. We even had a squash plant on our pitch, and Dominique gave us one of the squashes to eat! Celine and Dominique and the other staff were very friendly and Celine was very patient with my imperfect French, helping us out with information and solutions to some small problems. Having arrived by public transport, we especially loved the free shuttle Navette minibuses which run like clockwork in July and August, linking the campsite to not only Les Moutiers, La Bernerie and Villeneuf and nearby beaches, but with a change of bus, also to Pornic and beyond. All of us and especially our teenage son enjoyed the opportunity to go swimming in the pool.

Votre français n'était pas parfait mais suffisamment pour que l'on arrive à se comprendre et vous avez au moins le mérite d'essayer. Ik was blij met: What a friendly well run site. We were probably the only English family there but that didn't detract in any way as it made our stay feel like we were holidaying with the authentic French people. Everyone was friendly and welcoming and when our camper fridge failed super helpful. The swimming pool was super clean and the whole site very well kept. I'm not sure the family that runs the site could have worked harder. The site is superbly situated for touring the beautiful area and the lively, pleasant town is an easy walk away. All in all, a lovely site which I'm sure we will revisit. Thank you

Ik was niet zo blij met: Maybe the only small criticism was that our plot was just big enough for the van and a 2.5 metre square awning but that was probably due to the fact we booked just weeks before we went as our son is joining the Royal Navy and we weren't sure when he'd be home

Top up your tan on the sands or try your hand at surfing off Plage du Pré-Vincent (20 minutes’ walk), the only supervised beach in Moutiers-en-Retz, or grab your bike and head to La Bernerie-en-Retz beaches (15 minutes’ bike ride) to go fishing for oysters, clams and prawns. Family outings in Loire-Atlantique could include Planète Sauvage animal park (25 minutes’ drive) for the chance to see elephants and rhinos on the safari trail, or zookeeper days for younger kids in Legendia Parc (also 25 minutes), where you can all get up close to wolves. The carefully choreographed and history-themed shows at Puy du Fou (around 80 minutes) are one of the region’s most popular attractions, while sporty youngsters can hone their skills on bike trails and zipwires through the trees at Pornic Aventure - Parc Accrobranche (15 minutes). Book in advance to ride on the giant robotic elephant at Les Machines de l’Île in Nantes (55 minutes), where you can also explore the fantasy worlds of Jules Verne and Leonardo da Vinci. Combine your visit with history on a guided tour of the impressive Château des Ducs de Bretagne, and wind up a fun-filled family day at a terrace café in handsome Place Royale.
