A beach holiday in Austria? Yes indeed – pick a pitch at Camping Feriendorf am Maltschachersee and you’ll be a mere 200 metres from a splendidly spacious (and free) beach area on the Maltschacher See. Travelling with pets? They’re welcome too – in fact, there’s a separate fenced-off dog beach area where they can scamper and splash about.
This site, which is 10 minutes’ drive from Feldkirchen in Kärnten, has the upbeat atmosphere of a seaside park, with plenty of leisure facilities to keep you entertained – think tennis, beach volleyball, miniature golf and table tennis, plus an indoor pool for days when the weather’s not so great. There are also watersports rentals available at the lake for those who'd like to paddle over to different parts (charges apply for certain activities).
The surrounding area is equally packed with things to do, whether you’re heading out for a hike, wandering through vineyards, trying adventure parks or planning family days at attractions like Minimundus.
It doesn’t have to be all active, all the time though – the large pitches here have been designed to offer plenty of space to relax, with tall hedging around to provide peace, privacy and shade. Swimming, sunbathing and fishing at the lake are all fabulous ways to chill out, as is taking a table at the restaurant for a meal, a snack or a drink with a view over the water.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
This is a scenic area indeed, so once you’ve managed to tear yourselves away from the lake views you might like to head out for a hike on one of the trails that start just outside the site, including the Slow Trail which takes you through the vineyards as you follow the lake’s edge.
If just one lake isn’t enough, set off to the Wörthersee (15 minutes’ drive) for more water views – perhaps best seen from the top of the Pyramidenkogel Tower (40 minutes). If you like the idea of climbing towards the sky, you may also want to try out the treetop adventure courses at Kletterwald Ossiacher See (15 minutes).
Back on firm ground, you may like to take a wander around the attractive city of Villach (half an hour) or Klagenfurt am Wörthersee (25 minutes), where the streets are lined with colourful Baroque buildings. It’s also home to Minimundus, which has a superb model village as well as various interactive exhibits and a 4D cinema.
