Here’a a rare chance to bed down for the night on a working wildflower farm. Owned by Clive and Maureen Tonkin for more than 50 years, Westways Wildflowers is a two-hour drive from Perth and 15 minutes from the tiny town of Coomberdale in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region.
As it’s back-to-basics caravan camping on the farm, you’ll need to bring everything with you, including food and a barbecue, although showers and portable toilets are available on site.
From Westways, native wildflowers are sent to customers all over Australia and exported to Japan. You can view wildflowers (for a small charge) between August to November – but please note you’ll need at least a four-wheel drive vehicle for the self-drive Wildflower Loop around the 2,000-hectare property.
And it’s not all about the flowers, as the farm is also teaming with native birds and kangaroos, with the occasional emu putting in an appearance. When you’re out and about exploring, there are loads of shady spots for a picnic, including one with a view over the massive, 70 million-year-old Yallalie meteorite crater.

- Er zijn geen vuilnisbakken ter plaatse: alle afval moet mee naar huis worden genomen.
- Bij droog, winderig en/of heet weer zijn vuren, barbecues en vuurkorven niet toegestaan.

The Google Map layout is not completely accurate. If you are travelling via Prices Road to the location, please note that Prices Road comes to Coomberdale West Road and then has a slight left-hand turn onto Commberdale West Road before a right-hand turn onto Prices Road. It does not join directly onto Prices Road.
Therefore, the owners recommend that people travelling from Moora take the Midlands Road to the Coomberdale West Road for approximately 20 kilometres. Turn left and travel 8 kilometres to the first road turning right, Prices Road. Turn right and the property is at the top of the hill on the left-hand side.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
Sitting on the banks of the River Moore, Moora (20 minutes’ drive) is a major drawcard for self-guided tours of the township’s sculpture trail and colonial architecture – including the 19th-century, colonnaded Drovers Inn and post office.
If you fancy a day at the beach, head for Jurien Bay (an hour and 20 minutes) on the Coral Coast to swim in the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean and snorkel on the reef, or stop by Jurien Bay Marine Park (an hour and a half) to see if you can spot the colony of endangered Australian sea lions. Wind up the day dining on fresh crayfish and lobster in coastal Cervantes (an hour and 10 minutes).
Back inland, a short bushwalk in Watheroo National Park (35 minutes) will take you to Jingemia Cave, eroded deep into a rocky hillside over many millennia. Alternatively, drive through the red desert sand of Nambung National Park (an hour and 20 minutes) to the bizarre limestone rock stacks at The Pinnacles – time your visit for late in the afternoon and you may well spot kangaroos and emus as they come out to eat.
