Spending your holiday touring around South Wales and need a place to stay – perhaps within stumbling distance of a refreshing pint of ale? Then The Hog’s Head might just be the place for you. This family-run site has a number of hardstanding touring pitches at the back of a traditional pub in rural Monmouthshire, a 15-minute drive from the historic market town of Abergavenny. The proximity to the pub is only one of several reasons why staying here is a top idea. Your four-legged companion is also a welcome guest. The fully serviced pitches with water and drainage hook-up points sweeten the deal, alongside a toilet block and hot-water showers. There are heaps of interesting trails to explore in the area, starting with the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path, which goes just past the site. You can follow it to the River Trothy, the forested banks of which are home to colourful butterflies, or pick it up by the medieval Whitecastle fortress (10 minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ walk along a narrow country lane). All the while, you’ll be gazing at distant views of Sugar Loaf and other peaks in Brecon Beacons National Park. If you prefer to explore the area on horseback, there are a couple of stables within a half-hour drive of the site. In addition, you can practise your swing at several local golf clubs, or book a tour (with tasting) at the White Castle Vineyard (10 minutes). Please note that the site's pub is wet trade only, and does not serve food.

Ik was blij met: Toilets are wonderful . Instructions to get to site good .. follow them as went home abergavenny route and that was awful narrow lanes and very sleep hills. Lovely castle within walking distance. Clean pitch.
managed to get a good signal on my EE SIM and freeview was good so didn't use the o site wifi which was intermittant.

Ik was niet zo blij met: No signs for the toilets.. signage faint and difficult to read if you arrive late.. no recycling options which is illegal in wales. ..
Pub was closed Friday when we arrived owner was welcoming and explained they would be open on Saturday.

Ik was blij met: Shower/toilet shed.
Sheep/lambs in the field.

Ik was niet zo blij met: £35 per night!
Very overpriced due to lack of facilities.
There's nowhere to wash dishes!
There are no bins for recycling or non recycleable waste.
No lighting at night.

Van de manager: You are in the country side there are animals everywhere don’t have many bad reviews but when I do it’s usually from keyboard warriors
You had a sink in your camper van there is a 10 tonne recycling skip just round the corner sign posted & you have to drive rite past it when you leave

Ik was blij met: What a beautiful location! Wake up to sheep & a stunning countryside. At night you have no light pollution so the stars are incredible.

We had a warm welcome at the hotel & then it was easy access to the site driving through a clean farm streading. The pitch is a generous size & levelling was easy. The loos/showers are immaculate & not too far from the furthest point. We were so lucky to have a visit with only a few caravans at first.

There is a little pond so be aware if you have very young children. It's beautiful with magnolia trees in full bloom.

The pub has a children's play area.

We loved this site and will definitely return.

Ik was niet zo blij met: We haven't experienced it at a time when a wedding is on so can't comment. I imagine the festivities would be heard from the site but if you're prepared for that then it shouldn't be an issue.

Ik was blij met: Really quiet site with good size pitches. Facilities were great and very clean. Everyone we spoke to was super friendly and helpful, and gave us great tips for local walks. Being right on the walking paths is really convenient. Will definitely return!

I didn’t use the wifi but did try it out quickly. Good signal on the pitch (number 3, at the bottom) and when speed tested it was around 8 down and just under 1 up. There were only 3 vans on site so that could vary during busier periods. Had decent 5G signal there too.

Ik was niet zo blij met: It’s mentioned in other reviews that the road leading to the site is single track. Never much fun but not uncommon! It’s not too bad as they go. Regular passing places on most sections and not too narrow in between.

Ik was blij met: Extremely clean and well kept site. Lovely facilities good hot showers owners were very friendly and helpful for were to walk dogs and general local knowledge we’ve stayed here a couple of times now and love it nice pub on site not loud full of character beautiful views mostly level pitches

Ik was niet zo blij met: Don’t understand the charge for £10 per dog per stay( why per dog ) when they don’t use the facilities or have any impact just starting to make the prices creep up and up will be cheaper to book a bnb soon

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

The imposing remains of Raglan Castle (20 minutes’ drive), which was partially destroyed during the English Civil War, hint at the former grandeur of this moated fortress built in the 1430s. Check out the thick walls, the Grand Staircase and the Tudor panel in the visitor centre, then have a picnic on the lawn. Head to the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) for epic walks at places like Symonds Yat, where you can get sweeping views of the River Wye. If you’re into watersports, there are numerous outfits renting out paddleboards and canoes, or check out the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo. Hereford (45 minutes) is renowned for its elegant cathedral, home of the Mappa Mundi, a centuries-old map of the world decorated with drawings of strange peoples and mythical creatures. The Museum of Cider has ancient presses and other brewing paraphernalia, or you can visit The Weir Garden, a National Trust property on the River Wye.
