If you’re in need of a bit of downtime, how about this for a nifty north Wales location? Chestnut Heights Campsite is part of a 15-acre smallholding on the outskirts of Wrexham – and that means lots of meadow and woodland around for your outdoor time, but less than a 10-minute drive to the centre of town when you want to hit the shops or pubs. Several facilities are closer than that, in fact – there are a couple of takeaways within a few minutes’ walk and it’s about 15 minutes to the nearest supermarket and train station. Essentials sorted, you can then start exploring: perhaps stroll straight out of the site onto a footpath that leads to the lake at Moss Valley Country Park, or up to the nine-hole golf course (where you can play a round of golf or get a round of drinks in…) For more extensive days out nearby you might like to visit Llangollen, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Erdigg, head to the north coast for beach days or take hilly walks in the Clwydian Range. A bus stop is just outside the park for easy excursions. Back at base, it’s a pick-your-own-pitch setup, so you can choose your own favourite spot: maybe near the scenic patio area looking out over the Cheshire Plain or closer to the woods where the kids can scamper in the undergrowth. Facilities have been kept low key at this off-grid site, but guests will have access to portable toilets.
