What a splendid spot for a break in the Caithness countryside – the sheltered pitches at Wick River Campsite sit in a secluded and quiet location right on the banks of the Wick River, and yet they’re only a handy 10-minute walk from the various shops, pubs and takeaways of Wick. That setting also means that you’ll be within easy reach of plenty of things to keep you busy for several days – a short stroll into town gives you the opportunity to board wildlife-spotting boats, sample the delights of the Pulteney Distillery or take a bracing dip in the outdoor tidal pool (or the indoor pool if you’re not quite brave enough to face the chilly waters of the North Sea…) This is a site that’s run as a community enterprise, with all profits fed back into improving the site or contributing to local projects that will benefit visitors and residents alike. Stay here and you’ll be supporting a great cause as well as putting yourselves within easy reach of places like John o’ Groats and activities like fishing, golf and coast walks. Facilities on site have been kept to the essentials, with portable toilets and showers available for guests, and a play park just next door. Dogs are welcome to stay here too and join you for walks along the riverside trails that start just outside the site (these are great for a family bike ride too).

Ik was blij met: Very friendly helpful staff member. Great location. We had one problem and staff resolved this immediately.

Ik was niet zo blij met: 1st pitch offered was opposite the toilet dump facility and there was a queue of large campers waiting to empty. It was Whiffy.

Ik was blij met: Dog walking opportunities Adjacent to town, although rather bleak

Ik was niet zo blij met: Door locks on two out of 4 showers were too stiff to operate ( mens) One women’s shower didn’t spray pr produce hot water. Dish washing temporary facilities

Ik was niet zo blij met: Toilets were not finished so a portable toilet and shower unit was installed. No shop on site and the ground for pitches was extremely hard and un level

Ik was blij met: Everything; the scenery, the people, the facilities. The toilet and shower facilities were only temporary but still much better than most permanent facilities we've seen. Rabbits will graze just a few feet from the pitch. There's play area for the kids and just around the corner there's possibly the best playground for kids we've seen yet. Wick River Campsite is community run and all over Wick you can see signs of that spirit. Wick is the only place I've ever been where you feel welcomed be everyone you meet. The campsite itself is possibly the best maintained site we've ever been to. This is definitely the place to visit if you want space to breath or good people around you and there are plenty of other interesting spots nearby to visit if you're willing to look. Our only negative takeaway was that we had to head home to our normal lives.

Ik was blij met: Rural Situation and space. Nice welcome. The new facilities will make it into a really nice site.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Difficult to find when coming from the North. Porta cabin facilities cramped but new facilities will sort this.

Ik was blij met: Great campsite and had loads of space to choose from. The campsite is well look after and has good facilities. Seems like they are building new site for facilities and soon they will have even nicer facilities available which is exciting knowing the staff is absolutely lovely.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Few midges in the morning but really can’t be helped! Made us pack up quicker!

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Wick, of course, is the place to start – you can walk into the centre of town to visit the Wick Heritage Centre, grab a dram or two at Pulteney Distillery or head to the harbour to book a boat trip taking you out among the sea stacks and along the cliffs to see if you can spot seals, puffins and other marine life. Elsewhere along the coast, find the ruins of Castle of Old Wick (10 minutes’ drive) and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle (15 minutes), explore the intriguing stone creations at Hill O’ Many Stanes (15 minutes) or check out the natural rock formations at Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes) and Duncansby Stacks (25 minutes). Of course you can’t miss the opportunity to go up to the very north of Scotland to visit John O’Groats (25 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (40 minutes). While you’re in the area, stop by at the 16th-century Castle & Gardens of Mey (half an hour) or take a detour to Reiss Sands (10 minutes) for a stroll among the dunes.
