Set on the edge of the gorgeous Galloway Forest Park and with access to two lochs, Hensol Estate Holidays is a wildlife haven in southern Scotland with ample opportunities for relaxed or active breaks. The estate has a number of scenic on-site river walks, some of which can take you to a pair of RSPB bird hides overlooking a nature reserve and platforms where you can scan the horizon for geese and kites. Fishing enthusiasts, meanwhile, can cast their lines into Woodhall Loch. For active times, there are opportunities to get kayaking and paddleboarding either there or in nearby Loch Ken (subject to availability; extra charges apply to these outdoor activities). While staying on the estate, you'll have access to basic amenities like toilets and showers. You'll also be within a mile of a small but well-stocked village shop in Mossdale. It's also easy to get out to family-friendly attractions like Kenmure Castle (10 minutes' drive) or to larger local towns like Castle Douglas (20 minutes) where there are supermarkets, restaurants and pubs aplenty.

  • Voor sommige faciliteiten en/of activiteiten, zoals bike hire and fishing, gelden extra kosten, die bij aankomst betaald dienen te worden.
  • Honden zijn niet toegestaan als je verblijft in de accommodaties.
  • Commerciële voertuigen (voertuigen die gebruikt worden voor werk en/of het vervoeren van goederen of betalende passagiers) en voertuigen met reclameboodschappen zijn verboden op het terrein.
  • Kortingskaarten en cadeaubonnen kunnen niet gebruikt worden bij reserveringen via Pitchup.com.
  • Minstens één lid van het gezelschap dient 18 of ouder te zijn.
  • Onderkomens die langer zijn dan 5.7 meter, zijn niet toegestaan.
  • In de gemeenschappelijke ruimtes moeten te allen tijde mondkapjes worden gedragen.
  • Minimumafstand van 5 meter tussen de staplaatsen.
  • Als je vuur wilt maken, dien je de brandstof, houtblokken en kolen daarvoor ter plaatse te kopen.
  • Het wordt gasten geadviseerd om een zaklantaarn van goede kwaliteit mee te nemen, omdat delen van het terrein onverlicht zijn.
  • Houd er rekening mee dat de toiletten/douches uniseks zijn.
  • No access is permitted to the grounds of Hensol House, Kennels Cottage or Home Farm at any time. Pods: electricity is metered on site at £0.35 per kWh. The pod is fitted with an electric coin meter which takes £1 and £2 coins.

Apex campingpod (tot 5 personen)

Ik was blij met: Fantastic location, absolutely ideal if you're looking to hike, walk or bike around the (beautiful) nearby area. Super friendly campsite owners that were really helpful. Plenty of useful information for nearby things to do/places to eat. Very hot showers, clean toilets and really large pitches. Camping pods were good, more than enough space for 2 people - you could probably fit 4 adults in one pod! A good amount of space between each pod too, so you don't feel like you're encroaching on anyones' space. There's also good phone signal, if that's important (also wifi, but didn't use so can't comment on how good it was). There's also a small on-site shop if you've forgotten any of the essentials. Would 100% return.

Ik was blij met: Toilets & showers clean, we loved the use of the boat house with our kayaks, excellent place for swimming etc , weather permitting

Ik was niet zo blij met: No internet or Wi-Fi or phone signal could be gotten , also with young kids there is nothing at all for them , no swing park, nothing so therefore we will not be returning to this site, perfect if your just looking for a peaceful weekend cut off from everyone

Van de manager: Thank you for your review, we appreciate all comments made. There is an EE mast a stones throw from the campsite, however we are on the edge of the Galloway forest so guests tend to find if they go for a wee walk they often find a signal. We do have WiFi, which can be connected to at our Info Shop, however this only covers a 25m radius, our info shop does have a comfy seat where you can sit whilst enjoying some screen time. We specifically don't have a play park as we are all about the open environment and families enjoying family time together, we do have a "borrow box" which has some games, rounders, etc, and we do hire hire bikes for kids needing to run off extra energy when they have finished exploring the woodland walks and nature reserves we have on site, however there is an abundance of local attractions that we advertise on our boards from our favourite places to visit with our own kids when they were little. Star Gazer campingpod (huisdieren niet toegestaan, tot 6 personen)

Ik was blij met: Excellent site and facilities, easy to find, clear and consice email instructions for travel, pod set up and amenities. Pod was immaculate on our arrival and we left it the same way when we left. Microwave, kettle and fridge was a big help and also the outdoor fire pit was a very nice touch. Loved the fact it was a silent site from eleven pm as per the rules. Plenty to see and experience with just a short car journey. Purchased plenty of fire wood form the staff who were friendly and polite. We enjoyed our time at the site and we will definitely return for a longer stay, for the price I'd say the glamping pods are a good choice for anyone not wanting to set upntemts etc.

Ik was blij met: Excellent time camping at Hensol Estate Holidays. Booked last minute after kids decided they wanted to go camping before returning to school after the holidays. Glad we did, kids loved it. Plenty of space to run about, toilets and showers clean. Wish we stayed longer to hire bikes and do some fishing at the nearby Loch. Definitely be returning and plan it better next time.

Please note that using the postcode provided will take you down a very bumpy farm track. Travelling from Ayr, head down the A713 through Saint John's Town of Dalry. Turn right onto A762 at the Ken Bridge Hotel, heading for New Galloway. Follow the A762 to one mile south of Mossdale, over the humpback bridge. Turn left through the granite gates. Travelling from the south, follow the A75 to one mile west of Castle Douglas. Follow the signs into Laurieston, at the crossroads turn right up the A762 for Mossdale. One mile to the south, turn right at the granite entrance, just before the humpback bridge.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

The local area has lots of attractions to keep the whole family engaged, from Kenmure Castle (10 minutes' drive), a derelict fortified manor house, to Ernespie Farm (20 minutes), a kid-oriented adventure park in a relaxed rural setting. For rainy-day activities with younger kids, try The Cocoabean Company (20 minutes), where chocolate workshops and soft play are on offer, or head for a sweet treat at Cream o'Galloway ice cream, a much-loved local brand (30 minutes). If you find that the kids are running a tad high on energy after either of the latter, take them to run around or fly a kite on the sandy beaches of Scotland's west coast (from 25 minutes), or take them out on bike rides in Galloway Forest Park to beauty spots like Otters Pool (20 minutes). More outings are on offer at Gatehouse of Fleet (25 minutes), a historic village in a designated national scenic area with river views and a well-preserved 18th-century cotton mill. Dumfries' town centre (40 minutes) also has a historic riverside quarter and the Robert Burns Trail to explore, while visits to Scotland's most southerly point, the Rhins of Galloway, are also possible if you don't mind the hour-long drive.
