The rugged landscapes of the Inner Hebrides are yours to explore from Crannich Campsite, a family- and dog-friendly spot on a working farm in the Aros Peninsula, the northern part of the Isle of Mull. For an added benefit, those landscapes come with assorted animal life, including resident Highland cattle, sheep and horses, red deer inhabiting the local forests and the white-tailed eagles, buzzards and hen harriers hovering high up in the skies. The pretty spectacular location in the middle of Glen Aros is another perk: think epic woodland walks, including the circular Cill An Ailean Trail (10 minutes’ drive), which takes you past the graveyards of a medieval chapel. There are more walking and cycling trails around Loch Frisa (20 minutes), plus fishing (with a permit) in the River Bellart. Oh, and you’ll be about 25 minutes’ drive from Tobermory, home of a renowned whisky distillery. The site feels blissfully secluded, and indeed it is – accessed via a private track away from the main road. The rural surroundings (with sweeping views of the glen) and the nicely spaced-out pitches contribute to creating a private and peaceful vibe. There is a toilet and shower block with hot water, plus a separate building with indoor washing-up areas and a drying room, not forgetting other amenities such as electric hook-ups and motorhome service points, plus charging and recycling facilities. If you fancy a barbecue, you can pick up supplies at the nearest shop in Salen (10 minutes), where there’s also a pub, a petrol station and a couple of cafés.

  • Voor het gebruik van de elektrische aansluitingen is een kabel van minstens 20 meter nodig.
  • Het wordt gasten geadviseerd om een zaklantaarn van goede kwaliteit mee te nemen, omdat delen van het terrein onverlicht zijn.
  • Reserveringen mogen uit maximaal 2 gezinnen bestaan.
  • Houd er rekening mee dat de toiletten/douches uniseks zijn.
  • Zwemmen in het meer is niet toegestaan.
  • Bij droog, winderig en/of heet weer zijn vuren, barbecues en vuurkorven niet toegestaan.
  • Het opladen van elektrische voertuigen is niet toegestaan op het terrein.

Ik was blij met: Very pretty tidy site with excellent toilet and shower facilities even though the site was full with only one of each there was no issues. The track in is a farm track so a little uneven and covered with gravel quite dusty. Owner was helpful and did agree for us to move to a turning area when we asked .

Ik was niet zo blij met: We were put on pitch 1 initial thoughts what a great pitch near the facilities under the trees . The midges were soon out in force we could see other people on different pitches sitting in the sun whereas we were shut inside . Advise do not go during midge season

Ik was blij met: We stayed on the paddock section, for seven days, which has two pitches for caravans. Loved the views from the very spacious pitch and the toilet and shower were very clean. Despite only being one of each, it was never a problem.

Ik was niet zo blij met: The noise! There are a large number of peacocks, peahens and guinea fowl, all of which have free access to the site. The peacocks, although very beautiful, screech loudly and continually through the day and night, so peaceful or restful, it sadly is not. Midges and ticks are also a problem, which are not helped by the proximity of a pond and wooded areas on site.

Ik was blij met: Small clean and tidy site, owners have done amazing with the area helping to bring wildlife in by building ponds and planting hundreds of trees. Pot wash and clothes drying facilities were a bonus

Ik was niet zo blij met: Only one toilet and shower, which wasn’t a problem for us as there was only one more van on site, but in high season it could get busy.
Definitely not a dislike, just think one more of each would be better

Ik was blij met: Quiet location with good views across the hills. Clean facilities with very hot water. Lots of peacocks running around! Lovely cycle from site to Tobermory.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Only one toilet was a real pain. It was made worse by not being able to see the door as hidden in the trees. With 8 adults and 3 children on site it really wasn’t adequate.

Ik was blij met: Just perfect. Beautiful little touring site with amazing views.
There are 2 very large pitches which have EHU and water.
Very unusual for a touring site, there is a toilet and a shower. Both are very well looked after and situated in a little wooded area so you really feel your camping and not lined up in regimented lines like most campsites.
Great location for exploring it island.
Wonderful waking up to peacocks and peahens strutting their stuff, our dogs were mesmerised.
Highly recommend this idyllic little site.

Ik was blij met: Beautiful site, only sound was the sound of birds. Owners very friendly and they breed Highland cows, who we were able to visit. Bathroom and shower facilities, excellent and very clean.

To reach the Isle of Mull, you will need to take a ferry from Oban to Craignure, which needs to be booked in advance with Calmac. Lokale bezienswaardigheden

In addition to the Mull Aquarium, with its sustainable catch-and-release policy (residents are let go after four weeks), Tobermory is home to the Tobermory Distillery. This artisanal whisky distillery has been going for more than two centuries, and it runs guided tours and tastings. Lots of wildlife boat trips also set off from Tobermory Harbour. For a day at the seaside, head to Calgary Beach (half an hour’s drive), in a deep bay on the west coast of Mull. Just behind this vast expanse of white sand is Calgary Art in Nature, a woodland sculpture trail. Among its creations are a willow stag, a timber shark and a fairy house in the trunk of a tree. Overlooking the Sound of Mull from a rocky perch is the 14th-century Duart Castle (35 minutes). Check out the family portraits in the Great Hall before visiting the Clan Exhibition, which illustrates the link between the Maclean family (who built the castle) and the Scouting Association.
