The rugged landscapes of the Inner Hebrides are yours to explore from Crannich Campsite, a family- and dog-friendly spot on a working farm in the Aros Peninsula, the northern part of the Isle of Mull. For an added benefit, those landscapes come with assorted animal life, including resident Highland cattle, sheep and horses, red deer inhabiting the local forests and the white-tailed eagles, buzzards and hen harriers hovering high up in the skies. The pretty spectacular location in the middle of Glen Aros is another perk: think epic woodland walks, including the circular Cill An Ailean Trail (10 minutes’ drive), which takes you past the graveyards of a medieval chapel. There are more walking and cycling trails around Loch Frisa (20 minutes), plus fishing (with a permit) in the River Bellart. Oh, and you’ll be about 25 minutes’ drive from Tobermory, home of a renowned whisky distillery. The site feels blissfully secluded, and indeed it is – accessed via a private track away from the main road. The rural surroundings (with sweeping views of the glen) and the nicely spaced-out pitches contribute to creating a private and peaceful vibe. There is a toilet and shower block with hot water, plus a separate building with indoor washing-up areas and a drying room, not forgetting other amenities such as electric hook-ups and motorhome service points, plus charging and recycling facilities. If you fancy a barbecue, you can pick up supplies at the nearest shop in Salen (10 minutes), where there’s also a pub, a petrol station and a couple of cafés.

Deze goed georganiseerde, rustige camping biedt ruime plaatsen en uitstekende, schone faciliteiten, waaronder een veelgeprezen douche. Gasten genoten van de boerderijsfeer met vrij rondlopende Schotse Hooglanders en pauwen. De prachtige, vredige locatie is ideaal om Mull te verkennen. Hoewel het beperkte aantal toilet- en douchefaciliteiten voor sommigen, vooral tijdens drukkere periodes, een zorg was, vonden de meesten het beheersbaar. Enkele bezoekers merkten horzels op tijdens warmere maanden.

Ik was blij met Fabulous rural farm site, nestled in the middle of the island. Only 8 pitches, all hard standing, clean facilities, super friendly and helpful owners. So peaceful, chickens, peacocks 😄

Ik was niet blij met Would be great if there was some laundry facilities.

Ik was blij met Loved the farm atmosphere and board identifying our campsite. They had an organized system for the facilities and instruction for the visitors. It was very clean and keeped well. Added touch of the towel heating rack

Ik was blij met Site was well organised, signposted and marked out for each pitch, quiet site with clean toilet and shower. Washing up area well stocked with cloths sponges and fairy liquid. Kids loved spotting the herd of highlands every morning along with the peacocks and chickens.

Ik was niet blij met Only 1 toilet and 1 shower cubicle. A bit awkward for myself and 2 kids to get ready, especially in the morning when facilities block busy.

Ik was blij met Friendly hosts. A small site, with semi-private plots. Lovely location and beautiful scenery. Loved the highland cows and peacocks. Free WiFi, good hookups and fresh water availability.
Shower /toilet facilities were nearby, clean and well maintained. A small family-run site. Fresh eggs available.

On a 10day tour of Mull, skye and glencoe.. only got bitten here sadly

Ik was blij met Our pitch was hard standing and big enough to accommodate our caravan, awning and car with a stunning view across the glen. Peacocks and gineau fowl wander around but their noise just adds to the character of the site. Each evening we watched the red deer in the distance. There’s one toilet and one shower for the site which was never an issue. Both were very clean and warm with the shower having excellent pressure. Water points are plentiful and there are satellite hook up points too (never used them). No issues on site for phone signal EE and talk talk for us and my wife loved the resident highland cows. The site is off a single track road, but if you know Mull, the vast majority of the roads are single track. Passing places are plentiful so don’t stress it.
The host is a lovely lady who’s available if required.
The property next door to the site has an honesty box for home baking which was delicious and is a frequent thing across the island.
Weather wise we had it all from heavy rain to 30 degrees sunshine and midges weren’t an issue.
We love Mull and have visited several times though first time to this site. It’s a hidden gem and we wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

In addition to the Mull Aquarium, with its sustainable catch-and-release policy (residents are let go after four weeks), Tobermory is home to the Tobermory Distillery. This artisanal whisky distillery has been going for more than two centuries, and it runs guided tours and tastings. Lots of wildlife boat trips also set off from Tobermory Harbour. For a day at the seaside, head to Calgary Beach (half an hour’s drive), in a deep bay on the west coast of Mull. Just behind this vast expanse of white sand is Calgary Art in Nature, a woodland sculpture trail. Among its creations are a willow stag, a timber shark and a fairy house in the trunk of a tree. Overlooking the Sound of Mull from a rocky perch is the 14th-century Duart Castle (35 minutes). Check out the family portraits in the Great Hall before visiting the Clan Exhibition, which illustrates the link between the Maclean family (who built the castle) and the Scouting Association.
