You’re after a remote Scottish location (but not too remote), close to the beaches of the North Sea, but also within an hour or so of Cairngorms National Park, with its mountains and lochs. Tall order? Not if you stay at Southpark of Bradieston Farm. This site on a smallholding a 10-minute drive from the town of Laurencekirk, in Aberdeenshire, ticks all those boxes. Amenities here are on the basic side (no showers or toilet facilities), though the owners provide drinking water. However, a spot of off-grid wild camping can often be fabulous, and being here is all about the location. And what a location it is, between the coastal landscapes of St Cyrus National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive) and the foothills of the Grampian Mountains (also 15 minutes). This is prime territory for outdoor pursuits, whether you want a family-friendly lowland trail with scenic mountain views, a challenging hike up a Munro like Mount Keen or an easier hike through the Angus Glens. On your expeditions, be sure to keep an eye out for the local wildlife, from deer to ospreys. Speaking of wee beasties, your dog is welcome at the site, but it must be kept on a lead so as not to spook the livestock on the farm. The site owners are happy for you to have barbecues and campfires, as long as they are on a hard surface (for example, a concrete slab) or contained within a firepit. Whatever you need for the grill can be purchased in Laurencekirk, where there are also pubs and restaurants. For a pint with coastal views, you can head into Gourdon (10 minutes).

For wildlife enthusiasts, there's never a bad season to visit Montrose Basin (20 minutes’ drive). Run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, this area of mudflats created by the River South Esk attracts thousands of migratory birds, from wintering geese to breeding terns in the spring. Throughout the year, the reserve is home to waders, and you might also catch a glimpse of a seal or two. Scottish history comes with spectacular coastal views at Dunnottar Castle (25 minutes). The remains of this medieval fortress are up on a rocky headland overlooking the North Sea. The Dunnottar Cliffs Trail skirting Castle Haven bay leads to the dramatic Dunnicaer Sea Stack. There’s something for the whole family at Crathes Castle (45 minutes). While the grown-ups check out the building’s splendid 16th-century architecture and decorated ceilings (or the walled garden), the kids might prefer to let rip in the adventure playground. Afterwards, everybody can go on a nature trail spotting woodpeckers and squirrels.
