Ever thought you could feel right at home living on a smart country estate? Well, here’s your chance to give it a try. You won’t be staying in the medieval buildings themselves, but at Stowford Manor Farm you’ll set up in the gorgeous grounds of a 15th-century manor house in the Wiltshire countryside, about three miles from Bradford-on-Avon. And this small-scale site has another excellent feature – it’s right on the banks of the River Frome, with access to the water for fishing, paddling, swimming, paddleboarding and launching small boats. In fact, it’s such a great spot for wild swimming that the Farleigh and District Swimming Club has its base about half a mile downstream – and if you fancy joining them for a dip, you can join up for half price. The campsite itself is a fairly traditional setup, with simple facilities in the form of toilets, showers (extra charge applies) and hot-water washing-up sinks. Dogs and kids are welcome, and you’ll be allowed to set up barbecues and firepits as long as they’re kept off the ground. Logs, barbecue boxes and other goodies can be added to your booking to make life easy (and tasty…) As you might expect from a farm site, you’ll share the space with some animals (get ready to meet some pigs, donkeys and cows while you're here) as well as arable crops. What you may not have expected is that the site also has a lovely little tea room that’s open in the afternoons for cream teas and ice creams, and it also serves up wood-fired pizzas in the evenings (Friday and Saturday nights from May to August, plus other evenings in peak season).

Ik was blij met: The amenities on site were great; the pizza oven for dinner in the evening and the coffee truck in the morning. The toilets and showers were also clean and tidy. The pitch also had ample space so it didn’t feel as cramped as other camping sites I’ve stayed at.

Ik was niet zo blij met: The proximity to the road means it’s a bit noisier than other campsites I’ve stayed at but it wasn’t really an issue.

Ik was blij met: The electric pitch was flat and shielded from the back. This is a farm with chickens and ducks roaming freely. The location was a good proximity to Bath, less than 20 mins drive away. There is access to the river from the campsite so perfect for open water swimming, paddle boarding etc. There was a pizza stall at the weekend and small coffee van in the morning.

Ik was niet zo blij met: The site is quite near a main road and you could hear the fast cars in the night. There are only 2 showers for the whole site, which charge 50p for 8 minutes, they were however clean and hot. There were only 3 toilets for the whole site also. Albeit we rarely queued, it did let the site down somewhat, especially as it's a bit of a trek from the Cricket Ground field where we were staying. No wifi, or if there was we weren't told about it. We only saw the owners once.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Didn’t enjoy the rain, but it’s camping! 1 small point, main facilities were great, nearest to us could do with a little update, wash facilities were basic, but saying that did the job!

Ik was niet zo blij met: The site they named the cricket pitch is next to a road ,there biggest feature the river is blocked by nettles and can't be seen great shame.

Ik was blij met: Easy to book and extend our stay - we added another night as we liked it there so much! Beautiful location with a fab cafe too. Clean and well maintained facilities. Close to great places to visit like Bath and Bradford on Avon.

Ik was blij met: Massive field by the river lots of other families there too

Ik was niet zo blij met: Told us off for dog running to my partner. Dogs should be on the lead but if he’s clearly running too it’s owner because he’s seen him coming he’s not exactly doing any harm. Some understanding that some dogs are well trained and clearly aren’t harming anyone and no one around minds either would’ve been nice. Also price for campsites is just too high lately! Paying £25 for a piece of grass is crazy. Camping is meant to be a cheap holiday!

If you’d like to explore your immediate surroundings, you need only find one of the footpaths that runs from the site to places like Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Iford Manor Gardens or Westwood Manor. There are riverside walks galore around here too – either along the River Avon or by the Kennet and Avon Canal. A couple of the Avon’s top attractions are in fact its urban spaces – both Bradford-on-Avon (five minutes' drive) and Bath (20 minutes) are well worth visiting for their historic buildings. You may also like to take a trip to Frome (15 minutes). If you’ve brought the kids along on holiday, a trip to the safari park at Longleat (20 minutes) may well be on the cards; if that's a bit too big, consider booking a wolf experience at The Little Zoo (15 minutes) instead. For a more grown-up day out, perhaps you'd like to potter around Prior Park Landscape Garden (20 minutes).
