Feet up, hot brew in hand and the Somerset countryside stretching out for miles ahead of you – how's that for a glimpse into the future? Set in a level lakeside meadow on a hillside 15 minutes’ drive from Frome, the pitches at Redwood Rare Breeds Campsite sit peacefully on a hilltop next to 100 acres of woodlands. The views keep on giving, as the meadow is at the intersection of three lakes that are home to native wildlife like Canadian geese and herons. If you had long-distance eyesight, in the surrounding countryside you’d be able to pick out spots like King Alfred's Tower (15 minutes’ drive), Cranmore Tower (10 minutes) and Bratton Camp & White Horse (half an hour). Naturally that stunning scenery means there are plenty of walks nearby, including paths through the neighbouring woodlands. Stargazing is another thing to look forward to, as the family-run farm site has very little light pollution. There's a central firepit area where you can keep warm while looking up to the heavens. Guests are welcome to come down (free of charge) and greet the animals at the rare-breed farm park, which has animals such as pigs, cows, sheep, goats, quail, turkeys, ducks and chickens. Animal feed can be purchased in the farm shop, which also sells local produce including some of the farm’s pork, beef and lamb, as well as essentials like fresh bread, milk, cheese, fruit, logs, kindling and gas. The farm park also has a café and a playground with a sand pit, tyre swing and low ropes, while essentials on site include composting toilets and hot showers. For an easy outing it's a five-minute walk to a traditional country pub with a playground and hot food. Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead and cleaned up after, as there are free-range animals on the farm.

  • Minderjarigen (18-) dienen te worden vergezeld door een ouder en/of officiële voogd.
  • Op deze camping zijn hondenrassen/kruisingen die in de 'lijst met hoog-risico honden op agressief gedrag' zijn opgenomen, niet toegestaan. Denk aan de pitbullterriër en tosa, Argentijnse dog en fila brasileiro.
  • Groepsreserveringen voor 10 volwassenen of meer zijn niet toegestaan (met uitzondering van koppels en directe familieleden).
  • Het reserveren voor vrijgezellenfeesten is niet toegestaan via Pitchup.com.
  • Er mogen geen reserveringen worden gemaakt voor meer dan 28 aaneengesloten nachten.
  • Het wordt gasten geadviseerd om een zaklantaarn van goede kwaliteit mee te nemen, omdat delen van het terrein onverlicht zijn.
  • Houd er rekening mee dat de toiletten/douches uniseks zijn.
  • Bij droog, winderig en/of heet weer zijn vuren, barbecues en vuurkorven niet toegestaan.

Ik was blij met: Idyllic, super peaceful little paradise that’s been created here. With almost 360 degree views, a few large ponds, a beautiful enchanted wood - it’s very relaxing.

Rare breeds a bonus we all enjoyed and the local pub did us a lovely lunch too.

Very chilled hosts with very light touch.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Compost loo’s slightly impact the comfort factor so be aware!

There was also a high level of wasp and hornet activity when we were there so that could impact your fun if you are not at one with nature!

Ik was blij met: The field was nice, farm shop was good

Ik was niet zo blij met: Other campers stayed up playing loud music til gone 1am, nothing was done about this. Toilets smelled awful and were really dirty

Ik was blij met: Gorgeous location, amazing views, beautiful place to wake up in the morning! I loved the compost loos, and the showers were great. I loved hearing the Canadian Geese, and all the other birds that live in the area. And I even saw a baby deer in the woods, a beautiful, joyful moment (for me, the deer looked spooked!)

Ik was niet zo blij met: The farm road to drive to the campsite was very uneven and with lots of dips, my car didn't like it

Breakfast somewhere nice? Swing by Bruton (10 minutes’ drive), where there are lots of gorgeous places to eat, or pick up something to go on the market days in Frome (15 minutes). You’ll want plenty of fuel for hiking at Cheddar Gorge (40 minutes) or attending the country shows and fairs at The Bath & West Showground (15 minutes). Keep any food well out of sight at the Longleat (20 minutes) drive-through safari park, where the enclosures are full of monkeys, lions and lorikeets among other animals. There are several historic sites in the area too, from the famed Stonehenge (40 minutes) to The Newt in Somerset (15 minutes) estate and Stourhead (20 minutes), home to King Alfred’s Tower and a Palladian mansion with a regency library.
