Busy days out and peaceful times back at Buckland Campsite: that’s the order of the day at this rural Dorset spot, a 15-minute drive from the seaside harbour town of Weymouth. You'll stay on the kind of field you want to run through, arms outstretched, pretending to be an aeroplane. And why not? You’re on holiday… It's all nicely simple here, with basic but spick and span washrooms with hot showers, and a washing-up area for pots and pans. Barbecues and fires are fine, but so as not to harm the lush wide field the owners ask that you borrow some bricks from the fire points before you start sizzling your sausages. It’s a five-minute drive to a pub with food; for supermarkets, Weymouth is your closet bet. Not that shopping’s the only thing going on here… Weymouth's a grand town with a posh Georgian seafront, a sandy bay and a fine spread of stuff to see and do: you could meet the stingrays, turtles and sharks at the SEA Life Adventure Park, explore the Victorian fort in the harbour and spot rare birds at the RSPB reserves at Radipole Lake and Lodmoor.

Ik was blij met: We stayed during storm Lillian. So we experienced some pretty dramatic weather during our stay, but even with that we had a wonderful time. We were welcomed to the site and shown our pitch. Pitch size was lovely and we have a 6 man tent. The showers and toilet facilities were great. There were plenty of taps with drinking water accessible throughout the site. There was a laundry area, but we didn't need to use that so can't comment, but did see people using it. There are great places for the kids to play, a shop on site which includes things like air beds which was great as one of ours burst while we were there. They also had some affordable beach toys as well as the usual camping shop norms you would expect to get. The campsite is well lit, and there are lights around the camp site that stay on all night which make getting to the toilet in the night a lot easier than other places we've stayed. There are multiple bins throughout the site that are emptied regularly and broken things get fixed quickly. Lovely place to stay and we definitely want to go back. There is so much to do in the area. While there we visited 2 different beaches, one for playing and swimming and one for fossil hunting, we went to Weymouth Sea Life Centre which was about 15 minutes away and we went to Monkey World which was 30 minutes and there was so many other things we wanted to do that we ran out of time for. Such a beautiful place. We are already thinking about when we can go back.

Ik was blij met: Buckland campsite has everything we wanted/needed for a camping trip. We went no EHU but it is available on some pitches. Pitches are generous in size and well spaced out, plenty of space for kids to run around and play. There is also a play park and indoor games barn. Toilets always clean, hot showers, a well stocked little shop with lots of local produce, laundry room with washing machine, tumble drier and freezers to put your ice packs in. We were even allowed to charge our phones in there. Very friendly couple running it, nothing was too much trouble. Beautiful views and only 10 minutes drive to Weymouth beach. We will definitely be back next year!

Ik was blij met: Great campsite, all facilities you need for a few days away. Clean toilets and showers and never had to queue. Shop was handy if you’d forgotten anything and games room and play park was great for the kids

Ik was blij met: My family and I go camping every year and this was a lovely little campsite! The facilities were great, there was lots of space, a playground for the kids, even a games room! It's nestled in easy distance from some stunning and fun days out and we have loved our stay. Would definitely recommend and will be looking to come back again.

Ik was niet zo blij met: I did not find this an issue but there is a working farm nearby so be aware that the cows have opinions and will share them!

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

After a wander round Weymouth, make for Chesil Beach (20 minutes' drive), a narrow and wild spit of land that’s more like an airstrip. From here, hike the South West Coast Path down to Portland Bill and its lighthouse; you’ll bag sights of half a dozen castles and forts along the way. Alternatively, go east around the coast for about half an hour, taking in Lulworth Castle then dipping down to the blue waters, white pebble beach and wacky rock formations of Lulworth Cove, a prime spot for rockpooling as well as filling up the photo album. If it’s windsurfing, kayaking round the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast or paddleboarding you're seeking, Weymouth has a good handful of hire shops and schools, with more round the coast at Charmouth (40 minutes). The beach there is a brill spot to get the kids fossil hunting; head into nearby Lyme Regis (45 minutes) to learn about the billion years of history that created the coast and to see some fab fossil treasures. There’s more history to be had at Dorchester a 20-minute drive away, from a Roman amphitheatre to a Neolithic henge and an Iron Age fort. To meet your ancestors (in a manner of speaking) go see the antics at Monkey World, half an hour from the site, or monkey about yourself on the slides, flumes and chutes of Splashdown Waterpark, an hour away in Poole.
