Off the grid but in a fabulous spot on the map, Trebarber Retreat is a relaxed site for back-to-basics stays in the Cornish countryside, about 10 minutes’ drive from Newquay. The spacious grass pitches here have a quiet atmosphere but no facilities other than portable toilets – there’s no running water, electricity or wifi here, so you’ll need to be pretty much self-sufficient to enjoy a stay at this laidback site. There’s plenty of room to relax, though, and you’re welcome to bring a barbecue or firepit and set up your awning or gazebo for some shelter. A bus stop directly outside the site makes it easy to get into Newquay for shops, beaches and nightlife without the need to drive. The site is also within reach of many of Cornwall’s top attractions including the South West Coast Path, Padstow and Camel Creek Family Adventure Park, and there are plenty of pubs, cafés and farm shops around for your food and drinks. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept under control and cleaned up after. You’ll also be asked to respect a few other rules including taking your rubbish away and keeping noise to a minimum, with generators switched off too, after 8pm to ensure a peaceful stay for all guests.
