  • Peaceful and off-grid Cornish site 10 minutes’ drive from Newquay
  • Camel Creek Family Adventure Park and Lappa Valley 15 minutes’ drive
  • Dogs welcome on site; bus stop directly outside for Newquay services
Off grid but in a fabulous spot on the map, Trebarber Retreat is a relaxed site for back-to-basics stays in the Cornish countryside, about 10 minutes’ drive from Newquay. The spacious grass pitches here are quiet and made for self-sufficient guests – there’s no running water, electricity, showers or wifi on site, and just a composting toilet for emergencies. There’s plenty of room to relax, though, and you’re welcome to bring a barbecue or firepit and set up your awning or gazebo for some shelter. However, please check current safety restrictions with the site owners before lighting a fire or barbecue, especially during periods of hot and dry weather. The bus stop directly outside the site makes it a doddle to get into Newquay for shops, surfing beaches and nightlife without the need to drive. Trebarber Retreat is also within easy reach of many of North Cornwall’s top attractions, including the South West Coast Path, Padstow and Camel Creek Family Adventure Park, and there are plenty of pubs, cafés and farm shops around for food and drink requirements. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept under control and cleaned up after. You’ll also be asked to respect a few other rules, including taking your rubbish away and keeping noise to a minimum (no loud music or shouting), with generators switched off after 8pm to ensure a peaceful stay for all guests.

Liked Absolutely brilliant campsite in the perfect location for exploring Cornwall. We couldn’t have asked for a better base for our trip — Fistral Beach is only around a 15-minute drive away, with Padstow about 23 minutes and Perranporth just 22 minutes, so there’s loads to see and do within easy reach.

The campsite itself has a lovely wild camping feel, which was exactly what we were looking for. It’s relaxed, peaceful and a great place to switch off, while still being really well connected.

It’s also both children and dog friendly, making it ideal for families. One of the biggest bonuses is the bus stop right outside the camping field, with a walkway giving you direct access from the site. This makes it really easy to leave the car behind and explore the surrounding area.

A fantastic location, great atmosphere and perfect for families, dogs and anyone looking for a more relaxed wild camping experience. We’d definitely recommend it and would happily stay again!

Local attractions

The surfing dudes among you can head for Newquay’s popular Fistral Beach or the reliable waves off Watergate Bay (both 10 minutes’ drive); both offer board hire and lessons. The sandy sweep at Crantock Beach (20 minutes) has calmer waters and is popular for paddleboarding and bodyboarding; you can also rent equipment there. Younger kids will probably be keen to get to Camel Creek Family Adventure Park (15 minutes), with its gentle carousel rides, waterslides and animal encounters. Most will also appreciate the mini-steam train ride at Lappa Valley (also 15 minutes), and there are endangered red pandas and lynx to be spotted among the sub-tropical gardens at Newquay Zoo (10 minutes). Padstow (25 minutes) is a picture-perfect fishing village liberally packed with eateries from fish and chip shops to fine-dining restaurants. From there, you can catch a ferry across the Camel Estuary to Rock (it’s 35 minutes’ drive otherwise) to browse upscale shops and tuck into seafood at waterfront bistros.
