If your kind of retreat is one where you’re free to wade in the river, paddle downstream and spend evenings in a waterside pub, Riverview Camping and Caravans might be what you’ve been searching for. This peaceful site is right next to the River Medway, in the Kent village of Yalding… Naturally, that makes it a particularly fine spot for those aiming to launch their watersports kit while on a rural break, as it’s in the middle of the River Medway Canoe Trail from Tonbridge to Allington. There’s direct access to the river from the site, with a couple of slipways and a canoe hire place within a few minutes’ walk as well. The riverside setting is also a good one for those looking to settle down somewhere peaceful and pretty – but that’s not all this location has going for it. It’s also handily less than five minutes’ walk from the railway station, a coffee shop with a play area, and a lovely riverside pub/restaurant. Stroll for a little further (all of about 10 minutes) to get to the village centre for more pubs, takeaways, a tearoom, a bakery and the village shop. It’s all mighty convenient for those travelling without a car. Back at the site, basic amenities are in place – guests will have access to toilets and a washing-up area, but there’s no hot water available. Those hoping to spend the evening stoking a fire are in luck, as both campfires and barbecues are permitted on site.

Gezellige, ontspannen camping met ruime plekken, vaak aan de rivier (ideaal voor watersport). Kampvuren toegestaan. Faciliteiten zijn simpel maar schoon. Personeel is vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Speeltuin en pub in de buurt. Opmerkingen: weinig douches, rivieroever kan glad zijn.

Ik was blij met Owners friendly and informative. Was able to contact them easily regarding a query. Site basic but clean, totally as advertised. Lovely riverside surroundings with great pub and cafe nearby within walking distance.

Ik was niet blij met Although advertised, no hot water, would definitely benefit from having hot water for washing.

Ik was blij met Easy location to find.
Kids like the park in the middle of the field.
Nice to chose your own pitch and not be restricted.

Ik was niet blij met Toilet block is tired and dark at night (very minimal lighting!)
Check in hours are awkward (between 1pm & 245pm or between 5&6pm)
Felt rushed on the morning of departure. Received a message from the owner at 930am reminding us of the 11am departure rule, and advising we would need to pay extra to stay past this time. Felt quite unnecessary given we were well underway with packing up already.
Young son of owner was racing around the site on a dirt buggy which felt quite off putting, especially given we had young children playing.

Ik was blij met Good basic facilities, toilets dotted all around, washing up facilities and spacious pitches. The kids absolutely loved the rope swing into the river and playing a bit extra for a riverside pitch was well worth it.

Ik was niet blij met The portaloo closest to us got very sleepy and we could smell it from inside our tent whoever the wind blew unfortunately. It also ran out of toilet roll at the end of the day.

Ik was blij met Perfect location close to railway station.
Shops within a 20 minute peaceful walk
Boathouse restaurant is a 5 minute walk and the food is lovely there and staff are friendly.
Wood stocked onsite at a reasonable price
Pitch prices are also reasonable
Very close to very cute animals
Peaceful site giving a real rural feel to it.
Plenty of toilets
Pitch sizes are large and even when it is busy it is still very comfortable
The gates being padlocks is a safe touch it feels secure and closed off.
The sounds of the owls at night adds to the peace.
Perfect place for boating and fishing trips with direct access to river.

Ik was niet blij met Toilets could do with a revamp
The staff are hardly on site which makes buying wood very difficult we stayed for 4 days and only saw them once.
They could do with showers or hot water facilities other than that the site itself is perfect.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Pay a visit to the biggest collection of teapots in England. If such a thing wasn’t on your travel wishlist previously, it will be now – after all Teapot Island is only five minutes’ walk away. Also close by is The Hop Farm (five minutes’ drive), likely to be a hit with young kids due to its small farm animals and soft play. Adults will be happy to find things catering to their taste too. Fishing activities are available at Claygate Lakes (10 minutes) and at Mereworth Wines (10 minutes), taste test local wines and potions in the winery and taproom. If it’s the historical sort of stuff you’re mostly interested in, Leeds Castle (25 minutes) and Scotney Castle (25 minutes) will get that in full swing. Straight out of the 17th century, Knole Park (half an hour) is a National Trust site with a deer park, gatehouse tower and attics. Sissinghurst Castle Garden (half an hour) is another historical spot, with a Grade I-listed park and gardens. As for peaceful walks by the river and picnics in meadows, head to Teston Bridge Country Park (10 minutes).
