Looking for loads of family fun and sporty activities on hand during your break? You’ve struck gold with St Andrews Lakes, tucked away in the Kent countryside 45 minutes’ drive from central London and five minutes from the village of Halling. Here hardstanding motorhome pitches overlook a freshwater lake in a former quarry that’s been painstakingly transformed into a watersports hub (opening times vary depending upon the season and day of the week). There’s loads of choice here for activities – from open-water swimming to paddleboard and pedalo rental or dinghy sailing – and you can also sign up for a runaround on the lake's inflatable aqua park (closed between October and April). Then, when it’s time to rest up, you can retreat to the spa and wellness centre. There’s a beach too, if you’d prefer to find somewhere to snooze on the sand instead of playing around in the water all day. Please note that there's an extra charge for all activities, and advance booking is essential in peak season. Everything has been thought of to make your stay as easy as possible: there’s a watersports shop (rental is available too) on site, as well as an ‘inflation station’ to take the hard work out of pumping up your paddleboard. No need to worry about catering for your sports-mad kin either, as there’s a beach café serving drinks and homemade snacks, as well as a takeaway pizza service to keep you refuelled for your next sporting activity. And the pitches are pretty handy too: each has an electric hook-up as well as a picnic bench and chiminea for alfresco dining.

  • Commerciële voertuigen (voertuigen die gebruikt worden voor werk en/of het vervoeren van goederen of betalende passagiers) en voertuigen met reclameboodschappen zijn verboden op het terrein.
  • Deze camping ontvangt alleen gezinnen (directe familieleden) en koppels; reserveringen van andere groepen worden niet aangenomen.
  • De receptie is onbemand na 17:00. Verwacht je na dit tijdstip aan te komen, breng het park dan hiervan op de hoogte, zodat het team je informatie kan geven over jouw accommodatie.
  • Tenten zijn niet toegestaan op het park.
  • Minstens één lid van het gezelschap dient 21 of ouder te zijn.
  • Voor het gebruik van de elektrische aansluitingen is een kabel van minstens 10 meter nodig.
  • Onderkomens die langer zijn dan 6 meter, zijn niet toegestaan.
  • Dit is een rustige plek: muziek is strikt verboden.
  • Het wordt gasten geadviseerd om een zaklantaarn van goede kwaliteit mee te nemen, omdat delen van het terrein onverlicht zijn.
  • Reserveringen mogen uit maximaal 1 gezinnen bestaan.
  • Houd er rekening mee dat de toiletten/douches uniseks zijn.
  • Het opladen van elektrische voertuigen is niet toegestaan op het terrein.

Ik was blij met: Views of lake, the water is so blue. Facilities were clean and tidy. Opportunities to hire equipment and use the lake. Walking distance to shop and 25 minutes up hill to lovely a farm shop. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Some pitches are quite close to together but some of this is due to other campers parking. (This is not picking though as we were very happy on site)

Ik was niet zo blij met: Outrageous cost for logs £10 for 6 logs and you can’t bring your own! Totally ludicrous. Also on the lake pedaloes £35 an hour!

Ik was blij met: We were greeted by friendly and helpful staff who were all so happy it made the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming. We kayaked and then went to the sauna, plunge pool and hot tub. Once the aqua park closed for the day the site fell quiet and we had a peaceful evening alongside 5 other vans. A chimenea was provided on the pitch so we lit that and took in the sites and sounds of the lake and surrounding chalk cliffs. Had 24 hours of child and pet free time. Perfect! Highly recommend.

Ik was niet zo blij met: The price of swimming is prohibitive for a weekend trip. When you add together the cost of the induction and joining NOWCA, it's probably the most expensive two swims in the world! So don't visit for swimming unless you intend to return several times in the year.

Ik was blij met: So much on offer for activities for kids, families and adults. Friendly staff, great food and the campervan pitches all had picnic benches and fire pits which was brilliant and the food on offer from the cafe and pizza shop was delicious!

Ik was niet zo blij met: Other customers dumping rubbish and just leaving it behind them though the staff walked the whole site every day and cleaned it up after them.

If you can drag everybody away from the lake, there’s lots of heritage stuff to see in this corner of Kent. Historic Rochester (20 minutes’ drive) has a stately Norman castle and a Gothic-era cathedral to explore, while neighbouring Chatham (half an hour) showcases centuries of naval history at Chatham Historic Dockyard, where you can tour the World War II destroyer HMS Cavalier and the Cold War-era submarine HMS Ocelot. The spectacular moated Leeds Castle (25 minutes) has enough craft workshops, museums, events and sculpture trails to keep the family busy all day. However, should the siren call of culture start to wane with the kids, take them to Diggerland Kent (10 minutes) for some time moving earthworks and shifting soil around on JCBs. No need to panic if it rains either, as you can divert to the bowling lanes at Hollywood Bowl Rochester (10 minutes). If you’d care to wander further afield, London sights like Greenwich Palace, The Prime Meridian and the National Maritime Museum can be reached in less than an hour’s drive.
