If you're up for a spot of forest bathing – and in the company of free-roaming ponies – Ashurst Caravan and Camping Site, in the New Forest National Park, might be a spot that will suit you rather well. At this family-friendly site, you can choose to set up camp on flat, grassy pitches or delve deeper into the woods to stay in the shade of ancient oak trees. After that, all you need to do is embrace the peaceful vibe – or, if you prefer, get active by heading out for walks along waymarked trails through the woods, perhaps stopping for a rest and a pint of real ale at a traditional pub en route. If the grazing ponies and assorted birdlife on site have whetted your appetite for more animal-flavoured experiences, it's good to know that there's more of that within easy reach – within a 15-minute drive you can spy on otters, wolves and boars (New Forest Wildlife Park), watch deer being fed (Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary), and get up close and personal with farmyard animals and alpacas (Longdown Activity Farm). Whatever you choose to fill your days with, you may well be in need of a change of clothes and a freshen up once you get back to your pitch. That's easily done here, as the site's facilities include showers, a toilet block and launderette. Several gastropubs within a five-minute drive serve home-cooked meals, or you can walk into Ashurst village (five minutes on foot) and stock up on barbecue essentials at the supermarket. Please note, however, that disposable barbecues are not allowed on site.

Ik was blij met The welcome on arrival was friendly and warm. The information that was relayed was brilliant and clear. The facilities were clean and easily accessible. Everyone was quiet by 10:30, which was wonderful with young children. Permit checks by staff left us feeling safe and secure. The freedom to choose your pitch.

Ik was niet blij met The train track laying right beside the campsite, however past 11pm there didn't seem to be many trains.

Beautiful site. Well looked after and very helpful staff

Plenty of room for the boys to kick a football about.
Loads of shady spots to pitch up on hot days

Ik was blij met Pitches in forest- felt like wild camping. Being amongst the ponies was amazing. Pub next door with great food. Super clean and powerful showers. All well looked after and lots of staff. Nice and quiet even though it was a busy weekend.

Ik was niet blij met Nothing- it was amazing.

Excellent weekend stay with ample space and great staff.

Ik was blij met Pitch layouts meant privacy was maintained. We stayed during temperatures of 25/26° so it was great to have so my trees to pitch up under. The staff were very professional and friendly. Loved having the wild ponies on site.

Ik was niet blij met Only the fact that there is no designated phone charging area. My phone died half way through so would have been nice to have somewhere to top up.

Ik was blij met Really conventional to pub and train station, site was busy but not like middle of summer, I can imagine it gets packed

Ik was niet blij met Ground where we pitched awning was obviously previously had staying as really hard to put in tent pegs, others just with tents struggled too.

Just got home and im already planning when I can come back. 10/10

Ik was blij met Amazing site with brilliant facilities and great local amenities. Beautiful park that really gives you the feel of wild camping with the creature comforts of clean showers and toilets ect. Staff were super friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the area and site rules. The site was kept clean and tidy and had an amazing atmosphere throughout.

Ik was niet blij met No faults 10/10 can't wait to come back

Great site. Avoid pitching up by the railway line.

Ik was blij met Love yhe site, great location for getting to the coast or going for walks in the new forest. Friendly emplyees and toilets / shower blocks always clean.

Ik was niet blij met Unfortunatly we had pitched up right next to the railway line without knowing. (Ok but not great if you have young kids).

Showers are scalding hot.

Not the sites issue, however the nearest pub is a bit of a shambles. Been twice and both time wasnt impressed

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

There’s a lot of enjoyment to be found in simply wandering through the woods around here, but if you want a specific place to head for, perhaps try Blackwater Arboretum (10 minutes’ drive), which has a collection of trees from around the world, or Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary (15 minutes), where you’ll be guaranteed to spot the native animals at feeding time. As well as all the wildlife attractions around here, there’s also one where the animals are rather larger than life… younger kids will no doubt love the chance to meet their cartoon favourites in person at Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (15 minutes), plus the chance to go on various gentle rides. For older children, the gleaming attractions of the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (15 minutes) may be more suitable. This location on the eastern side of the national park also gives easy access to Southampton (15 minutes) for the SeaCity Museum and Solent Sky aircraft exhibition or boarding ferries for a trip to the Isle of Wight.
