West House Farm is an off-grid pop-up site at an Essex farm surrounded by greenery and yet easily accessed from the A12 and a mere half-hour walk from the centre of Colchester. (And if you’re looking for a quick escape from London, you may like to note it’s less than an hour’s train journey to get out here, followed by a five-minute taxi ride or a 25-minute walk on a path through the fields.) You’d never know you were so close to a town centre when staying here: pitches are in riverside meadows surrounded by trees on the banks of the River Colne. A couple of footpaths connect up to the site – one running through fields and river meadows to the town centre and the other through the neighbouring golf course, which is open to the public for games, kids’ adventure golf, spa treatments and meals at the restaurant. When not out rambling locally, you might like to plan days out at the famed Colchester Zoo, see the scenery that inspired John Constable’s paintings at the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or head to the seaside and the beaches of Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. This is a family-friendly site, but as it’s a working farm it’s not able to accommodate dogs. Facilities are on the simple side, but you’ll have access to flushing toilets and hot showers, and there’s plenty of space to set up all your kit.
