Looking for somewhere rugged, remote and with loads of space? This might be the place. Park up at Dalegarth Campsite in Cumbria to stay at a hill farm site with purebred Herdwick sheep, set right alongside the clear-water pools of the River Esk. This spacious park has lots of room for spreading out to soak up the Upper Eskdale valley views, and it's only a 20-minute drive from Wast Water, 25 minutes from the coast and half an hour from the car park for Scafell Pike. This place is within easy reach of plenty of spectacular walks: Eskdale has some of the Lake District’s most spectacular scenery, so walking boots are very much required when meandering around the mighty waterfalls and hills. The site’s owners also reckon some of the national park’s best wild swimming spots are close by, including the Doctor Bridge a few minutes’ walk away. Jumping in the water from here is not high-octane enough for the thrill-seeking types you’re travelling with? Take adrenaline-seekers to the outdoor activity centre up the valley (five minutes' drive away or a 35-minute walk) for activities like kayaking, canyoning and climbing. For a post-activity drink or meal, stroll 10 minutes from the site to the local pub, which serves delicious stonebaked pizzas and a nice selection of pub meals and drinks. A half-hour wander along the river will also get you to two more pubs.

Deze ruime, goed gelegen camping heeft vriendelijk, behulpzaam personeel en prachtige uitzichten. De meeste kampeerplekken zijn vlak en ruim. Gasten genoten van de nabijheid van de rivier voor zwemmen en mooie wandelingen, inclusief naar watervallen en pubs. De eetkraam op het terrein is populair. Hoewel geprezen om de rustige sfeer en basisvoorzieningen (douches), waren sommigen bezorgd over de netheid van Dixi's en gebrek aan warm water om af te wassen.

Staanplaats kampeerbusje op gras zonder elektriciteit

Ik was blij met The 2 available fields were huge with plenty of space to pitch our campervan and awning. There was also plenty of space left in the middle of the field for kids to play safely. Right next to the river which was lovely to cool down in after a walk in 28 degree heat. Plunge pools nearby and walks from the site in all directions. 3 pubs within walking distance. Waterfalls and the L'all Ratty railway.
Perfect campsite for visiting the Eskdale Valley.
The Eskfest was on during our stay and was within a 5 min walk but the site was still very peaceful and quiet.

Ik was niet blij met Nothing really to dislike,
If portaloos aren't your thing then maybe give it a miss.
But this is a site that is just being set up so facilities will probably get better in the future.

Ik was blij met Lovely hosts and location! Nice and secluded with beautiful nature surrounding. Went to sleep listening to the river and woke up to birdsong. A warm pub less than a ten minute walk up the road. Hope to visit again!

Ik was niet blij met The trailer with the firewood wasn’t very organized and there was only one (wet) fire-starter left so we struggled to make a fire.

Ik was blij met Lovely campsite with lots of space. Hot showers and clean portaloos. Right next to a river which is fantastic for swimming/paddling in. A short walk to two nice pubs serving excellent food. Very freindly staff providing logs to buy for the fire pits.

Ik was niet blij met Showers are far away if you stay in one of the other fields. Would be great if they had another couple in the next field where the toilets are situated.

Ik was blij met Beautiful peaceful location run by wonderful helpful people full of hints on how to make your stay more in joyable.

Love the idea of the food hut on site with good prices not trying to rip you off, the showers are both hot and powerful with a view of the sounding treeswhile you shower.

There's a river that runs along one side of the site that looks ideal for a dip if the river isn't in spate kids will love it.

Nice and quiet we slept very well on this site.

Ik was niet blij met Not to keen on the porta loos but they did the job.

Ik was blij met Really good campsite, lots to do and see also close to all major walks and wastwater lake, beach is close by 10 mins to Drigg.

Had a fantastic weekend so did the kids and dogs.

Lovely people great site will definatly be going next year again.

Ik was niet blij met Portaloo not everyone's cup of tea but all part of the camping experience ( better than a hole in the ground!)

Follow the valley up past Dalegarth railway station and Brook House Inn and keep going for around a mile and a half until you see a turning to the right signposted Dalegarth Campsite and Penny Hill Farm. Take this turning – if you get to the Woolpack Inn, you've gone too far. Go over the humpback bridge and turn immediately right. Do not go straight on towards Penny Hill Farm (they get very grumpy). Instead, keep going over the cattle grid and up a slight incline until you see the signpost on the right.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

The local area is rich in history, with local attractions like Hardknott Roman Fort (10 minutes' drive) close by. Only head here if you're happy driving up the Hardknott Pass though – this single-track road is one of the steepest in England, so caution is advised. In addition, if you're looking for something a little more accessible, there's Muncaster Castle (20 minutes), a Grade I-listed fortress with a maze and falconry centre. Carry on exploring aboard the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway (nearest station 20 minutes) for nostalgic journeys through the west of the Lake District, or head towards the hills to explore Scafell Pike mountain (35 minutes) and Wast Water lake (25 minutes), the deepest inland body of water in England. The west Cumbrian coast is also within easy reach if you fancy a change of scene from the greenery of the national park. Head to Drigg (25 minutes) for a nature reserve made up of quiet beaches and sand dunes, wend your way towards Whitehaven (45 minutes) to explore its marina or bet on St Bees (40 minutes) for birdwatching – it's home to North West ​England's only cliff-nesting seabird colony.
