Looking for somewhere rugged, remote and with loads of space? This might be the place. Park up at Dalegarth Campsite in Cumbria to stay at a hill farm site with purebred Herdwick sheep, set right alongside the clear-water pools of the River Esk. This spacious park has lots of room for spreading out to soak up the Upper Eskdale valley views, and it's only a 20-minute drive from Wast Water, 25 minutes from the coast and half an hour from the car park for Scafell Pike. This place is within easy reach of plenty of spectacular walks: Eskdale has some of the Lake District’s most spectacular scenery, so walking boots are very much required when meandering around the mighty waterfalls and hills. The site’s owners also reckon some of the national park’s best wild swimming spots are close by, including the Doctor Bridge a few minutes’ walk away. Jumping in the water from here is not high-octane enough for the thrill-seeking types you’re travelling with? Take adrenaline-seekers to the outdoor activity centre up the valley (five minutes' drive away or a 35-minute walk) for activities like kayaking, canyoning and climbing. For a post-activity drink or meal, stroll 10 minutes from the site to the local pub, which serves delicious stonebaked pizzas and a nice selection of pub meals and drinks. A half-hour wander along the river will also get you to two more pubs.

Great riverside spot with bonza views, walks & pubs. Staff are legend. Facilities are basic but do the job (hot showers, portaloos). Mostly peaceful, but some noise from campers can happen. Food van's a winner.

Liked A beautiful view next to the mountain and river

Disliked Really hard to get to the location. Different address than the one on the map. She texted us the new location. Is away from the main road and hard to get to it. No shower, no bins, nothing as in photos. Only a site portable loo on an empty field. Really disappointed. We paid for 2 nights. We called the lady to let her know that we will arrive in the evening as we drove from Coventry and it was heavy traffic. She told us that we are not allowed to get on site after 6pm as we disturbed the other people. We ended up sleeping in the car next to the campsite until the next day. She didn't want to return the money for that night. Early morning when we arrived on site we were surprised to see only one car on campsite. I recommend you the campsite from the main road with all the facilities included.

From the manager: The most ridiculous review ever! You rang me to say you would arrive at 11pm!! This I told you was unacceptable in every way and you were welcome to arrive as early as you liked the following morning so sleeping in your car was completely your own choice! Firstly from a safety perspective you are driving onto a site in a dark skies area where people are asleep on the ground. Secondly it is unfair to disturb sleeping people who have made provision to arrive in a timely manner. Lastly you are arriving in one of the remote parts of the Lake District so arriving in daylight would have made it possible to find the site easily! No campsites allow entry after 8/9pm in the valley. We don’t have a barrier but the others do!
The address is on the Pitchup site and no one else has had an issue with the fact that it was highlighted we had to move sites and use showers on the old site. The new address and photos are on the pitchup page!
Has you arrived on time you would’ve been shown where the bins, water etc was located which was in the field.

Liked This place is ideal for families and friends. Walks on the doorstep cracking views. Good food in the near by pubs. Can't wait to get back for another stay and explore some more.

Liked Loved the space,Kate was really lovely. Had a gorgeous loop walk along the River Esk to Dalegarth station. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Disliked It’s a shame the new site (thanks to the council) doesn’t have the showers and we didn’t end up going back to the old site to use them but handy that we could have done.

Liked Setting, relaxed pitch choice, herdies in field, price, wild swimming spot just round the corner, walking from the campsite, steam railway!

Disliked Portaloos needed emptying after what assumed was a busy weekend, could maybe do with 2 extra or more regular emptying

Liked The location was really good for what we wanted to do (hikes and co.), firepits were provided (all you needed to do was buy some wood which was fairly proced) and, it was dog friendly

Disliked There were only 2 portaloo's for the whole campsite and showers (if you wanted a shower you had to drive to the old campsite)

Liked The views were incredible. And Kate was the perfect host. She came to welcome us, got us wood for the fire pit, and offered great tips for walks in the surrounding area. There was an incident with a large group of campers who made a lot of noise and refused to keep it down one night, but when we told Kate about it she asked them to leave. I thought she handled the situation excellently and everyone else was very pleased to have a sound night sleep the next night. I will definitely stay here again, its the perfect spot.

Route directions

Follow the valley up past Dalegarth railway station and Brook House Inn and keep going for around a mile and a half until you see a turning to the right signposted Dalegarth Campsite and Penny Hill Farm. Take this turning – if you get to the Woolpack Inn, you've gone too far. Go over the humpback bridge and turn immediately right. Do not go straight on towards Penny Hill Farm (they get very grumpy). Instead, keep going over the cattle grid and up a slight incline until you see the signpost on the right.

Local attractions

The local area is rich in history, with local attractions like Hardknott Roman Fort (10 minutes' drive) close by. Only head here if you're happy driving up the Hardknott Pass though – this single-track road is one of the steepest in England, so caution is advised. In addition, if you're looking for something a little more accessible, there's Muncaster Castle (20 minutes), a Grade I-listed fortress with a maze and falconry centre. Carry on exploring aboard the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway (nearest station 20 minutes) for nostalgic journeys through the west of the Lake District, or head towards the hills to explore Scafell Pike mountain (35 minutes) and Wast Water lake (25 minutes), the deepest inland body of water in England. The west Cumbrian coast is also within easy reach if you fancy a change of scene from the greenery of the national park. Head to Drigg (25 minutes) for a nature reserve made up of quiet beaches and sand dunes, wend your way towards Whitehaven (45 minutes) to explore its marina or bet on St Bees (40 minutes) for birdwatching – it's home to North West ​England's only cliff-nesting seabird colony.
