Oh, to be in the rural Yorkshire Dales, sipping on a brew surrounded by Howgill Lodge’s three resident alpacas on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate. Built into the hillside, the terraces are separated by dry stone walls and all spots have simply stunning views of green slopes. This may be a spectacularly rural spot, but there’s no shortage of stuff to get up to locally, whether you're watching the friendly resident alpacas tuck into their breakfast, taking a wild dip in the river Wharfe 10 minutes’ walk from the site or tracking down a pint of something in one of two traditional Yorkshire pubs half an hour’s walk away (one of these serves real ales and good food, and has a lush beer garden, by the way…) Alex and Georgina, the friendly staff at this dog-friendly site, have heaps of local knowledge. Let them dish out the goss on the area's walks, cycle routes and attractions as well as the top local places for food and drink (such as the café five minutes’ walk away for a choc brownie and milkshakes). You'll need all the calories if you're setting forth for Yorkshire Dales walks like Simon's Seat… It really doesn’t matter whether you’re after an action-packed getaway with the kids or a quiet wildlife retreat with loved ones and your canine companion – both are easily achievable here. And either way, modern, high-quality facilities on site include hot showers, laundry facilities and washing-up sinks.

Zeer aanbevolen camping met prachtig uitzicht en uitzonderlijk schone, moderne faciliteiten. Gasten prijzen het vriendelijke personeel, de goed onderhouden terreinen en ruime, privacybiedende terraspitches. Prima uitvalsbasis voor wandelingen en voorzieningen. Iedereen wil terugkomen. Ik was blij met Peaceful, well laid out site and beautiful scenery.

Ik was niet blij met The nearest pub is not 30 minutes away. More like 50 to 60 and the walk is tricky in place.

Ik was blij met Everything! All of the facilities were immaculate, the staff were all friendly, the layout of the pitches is great - it feels like you have lots of room, handy having the Brownie cafe close by (vegan brownies, vegan pizza and coffee were all delicious) and incredible views of the dales!

Ik was blij met Beautiful location. Coffee and pastries in the morning! Very clean showers and toilets. Quiet time in the evenings. Other campers very pleasant which I guess is down to the type of people the site encourages and like to use it.

Ik was niet blij met The only minor gripe was our pitch was a bit cramped for our tent size, however I would gladly use this site again now we’ve used it and know the layout of the site and where we would like to be pitched if possible when we visit again.

Ik was blij met Really enjoyed the tiered layout, so even though they were fully booked you still felt you had your own space. The shop was really well equipped for anything last min, and the freezer really helped us out in 30c weather! And the alpacas were very cute too.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

If one morning you feel inspired to go strolling, there’s no need to pack up the car. The path to Simon's Seat (half an hour’s walk to the top) is barely a couple minutes' stroll from the site and has simply grand views of the Yorkshire Dales. Carry on rambling into the surrounding moors, where there’s a waterfall dubbed ‘the valley of desolation’. There’s not much desolation around, but there is a gorgeous waterfall and a pool to wade in. A short drive will get you to local villages or towns like Grassington (20 minutes' drive), which has art galleries, a cobbled market square and e-bike hire, and Skipton (20 minutes), which has a castle and heaps of eateries. Another good outing is the Stump Cross Caverns (10 minutes). Discovered by lead miners in the mid 1860s, the cave complex has a cinema and exhibits including prehistoric remains of wolverine and reindeer. The caverns have a hilltop walk, but if you’re still in the mood for more good walks, excellent trails include those around the half-mile-long limestone gorge at Troller's Gill (10 minutes) and Rylstone Cross (25 minutes).
