Looking out over green fields grazed on by sheep, and with River Swale walks right from the grounds – how smashing is Hazel Brow Farm Campsite for a serene stay? With just a handful of pitches, this site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is also peaceful; situated in the valley bottom below the village, it's surrounded by calm countryside and just across the river from the Swale Trail walking and cycling route (bikes can be hired less than 10 minutes' drive away). If you’re planning to give your hiking boots a good workout, set forth on the site’s private footpath running down to the River Swale or climb the nearby hills through lush fields for memorable views over Swaledale. You could also stroll to the village of Gunnerside, a couple of miles west, for its traditional pub and a café – both serving food – or roam to Reeth, four miles to the east, again following the river. Set in a kind of natural amphitheatre, this settlement is where Swaledale meets up with Arkengarthdale and is known for having (yet more) excellent views. Facilities back at Hazel Brow include a toilet block and a mains water supply. The access lane is quite steep and narrow and, although there is flat space when you reach the bottom, it’s not accessible enough for large, A-class motorhomes – please bear this in mind when booking.

Ik was blij met: Lovely quiet tucked away site. Stunning scenery and nice simple ‘old style ‘ camping facilities. Also met another lovely young family stand on the field. Highly recommended if you want off grid and peaceful.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Nothing. For me it was perfect!

Ik was niet zo blij met: Shame there is no shower . Washing up sink not very big .hard standing area not good better off in field if you have a camper with a awning

Van de manager: Sorry we still don't have a shower, planning permission has just been turned down but we won't give up trying! I think you were maybe washing up in the hand wash sink? Yes, hard standing isn't much good for awnings, thanks for pointing this out, although the area is handy for the wifi and the loos! . Ik was blij met: What a lovely site. Setting is as picturesque as they come. We had a lovely, warm welcome from the owner. Toilets are basic but kept very clean. The kids loved the menagerie of animals as well finding all the little bugs and creatures hidden across the site. No light pollution and the only noises at night were from the wildlife and farm animals around - perfect mix.

Ik was blij met: A lovely campsite with amazing views! Great facilities and very friendly owners. Seeing the lambs and alpacas was an added bonus!

Ik was niet zo blij met: No showers but this is stated when booking. Only thing missing but great if you can do without.

Ik was blij met: Catherine the owner is just so lovely, helpful and easy to talk to, we are always made to feel so welcome when we stay, the campsite is so tranquil and the views are out of this world, the facilities are basic but more than enough for us, the walks are amazing from the campsite and the river is beautiful, this place is the closest to heaven you can get.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Nothing to dislike, it's perfect.

Ik was blij met: •Private enclosed area for 3 tents •Plenty of toilets •Indoor barn area with seating / kettle / sink / eggs to purchase •Lovely farm animals •Friendly owner •Amazing views

Ik was niet zo blij met: A bit noisy at night with the animals but that’s to be expected.

Ik was blij met: Very convenient for walk to Reeth along the River and visit to local pub, the punch bowl, for tea on our way back. Owners were very welcoming and caring - will return!!

Please drive carefully down the single track lane signposted 'Hazel Brow Farm' (If approaching from the east continue 600m to turn into the sharp bend). Follow the 'Pitchup' signs, keeping to your left at the fork by cottages near the bottom. Continue on the cement tracks and through the gate by barn. Field pitches are ahead and to your right. Farm pitches are accessed further on, or are on the gravel area on your left.

Roam around Richmond (35 minutes’ drive away) to investigate the ruins of Easby Abbey, along with a Norman-era castle and the Green Howards Regimental Museum – or splurge on locally-produced snacks at the cobbled market square for snacks while walking through nearby woodland. If that whets your appetite for more artisan treats, aim for the Wensleydale Creamery (35 minutes), where you can learn about the history of Yorkshire cheese and, more importantly, pick up masses of the stuff to gorge on. When you’re full to the brim with dairy products, another wander’s in order to work it all off – amble to a waterfall such as Aysgarth Falls (half an hour), then move over to the Aysgarth Edwardian Rock Garden close by for – you guessed it – a little look at an Edwardian rock garden. If inclement weather is making outdoor expeditions too tricky, find shelter in the 14th-century ramparts of Bolton Castle (25 minutes).
